Jagan's house attached, a third of his MLAs gone to TDP, he faces uncertain future.

The Lotus Pond residence of Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has been the talk of the town since he built it — a multi-storey luxury home with Italian marble floors and the finest interiors. Last week, the Enforcement Directorate attached almost all known properties owned by Jagan including the palatial home. Jagan may not lose the house yet but there is a long, legal battle ahead.

Attachment of properties, however, is only one of his worries. Jagan, president of the YSR Congress Party, is struggling to remain politically relevant in post-bifurcation Andhra Pradesh, where the ruling TDP is riding a wave of rising public hopes starting with the construction of a new capital city in Amaravati. The TDP and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu have also started poaching on YSRCP MLAs and leaders

After the ED attached Jagan’s properties, TDP central disciplinary committee member Somisetty Venkateswarlu said the time has come for Jagan to wind up his party and quit politics. “The 21 YSRCP MLAs who quit and joined the TDP are very lucky,” he said.
Many of the senior leaders who have quit the YSRCP have cited Jagan’s “autocratic” attitude. M V Mysura Reddy, who had come from the TDP, has now left the YSRCP too, saying, “Except money, nothing else matters in the party. Jagan craves for power all the time and is very autocratic.”
Others who had aligned themselves politically with the YSRCP, such as former DGP Dinesh Redy, have quietly withdrawn. MLA Jaleel Khan, who joined the TDP recently, said he had felt suffocated in the YSRCP as there had been no communication with the party leadership.

The YSRCP, which had 67 MLAs after the May 2014 elections, is now reduced to 47, with many more MLAs waiting for an invitation from CM Naidu to join the TDP. Worried by the exits, Jagan recently complained to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh that democracy in AP was under threat as Naidu was luring his MLAs with “bribes”.

In seeking to make the YSRCP irrelevant, Naidu’s approach has been aggressive as well as soft, depending on the situation. When farmers loyal to the YSRCP in Thullur Mandal of Guntur started protesting against land procurement for the new capital, Naidu simply sweetened the compensation package, which split the protesting farmers.
Naidu also foiled any further plans of protests by starting work immediately on the 33,000 acres of the capital region and shifting the AP capital from Hyderabad to temporary secretariat buildings at Velagapudi, although Hyderabad will remain joint capital till 2024. The sight of the capital buildings coming up, widening of roads and landscaping, and the monthly flow of compensation cheques to farmers has put a stop to protests in Guntur and Vijayawada.
In the last week of April, Jagan was preparing for a hunger-strike as the TDP government had failed to announce a second instalment of a farm loan waiver. On May 2, the government announced a waiver of Rs 3,300 crore and released funds.
And when Kapu community leader Mudragada Padmanabham backed by the YSRCP began a protest for reservation for Kapus and called for a massive public meeting at Tuni in West Godavari, the TDP government neither opposed it nor tried to negotiate with Padmanabham to call it off. Padmanabham failed to control the mobs that set a train on fire and vandalised the railway station, police stations and vehicles. The TDP put the blame on the YSRCP for supporting the protest and causing the violence, and Jagan and his party leaders struggled to defend themselves. At the same time, the TDP government allocated Rs 1,000 crore for Kapus through the Kapu Corporation and promised to implement recommendations made by the Manjunath Commission that has studied the community’s state of living. When Padmanabham started another hunger-strike, this time demanding release of Kapu leaders arrested for the violence, the government tweaked some rules and arranged for their release.
“The TDP cannot afford to lose the support of the Kapu community, 27 per cent of the population. They had helped the TDP come to power in 2014,” said political analyst T Ravi. “Jagan is trying to split the Kapus and turn them against the TDP. The TDP is handling it tactfully, I think, but Naidu may end up opening a can of worms.”

While demanding wavier of farm loans and schemes for farmers in Anantapur on June 2, Jagan raised a controversy by saying people should throw slippers at CM Naidu wherever they see him for having let down farmers. The TDP hit back, with leaders and workers obstructing Jagan wherever he went and asking him to wind up his party and quit politics. For the first time, Jagan’s effigies were burnt by TDP workers. And the YSRCP did not even react.
The party has, however, hit back at the TDP for having published, before the 2014 elections, Raja of Corruption, a book that accuses Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and his son Jagan of taking huge bribes. The YSRCP has released a book of its own, Emperor of Corruption, accusing CM Naidu and TDP leaders of corruption and turning the state into a commissions and kickbacks “rajyam”. The YSRCP has alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 1.34 lakh crore.
Ambati Rambabu, YSRCP spokesperson, insists Jagan is the most popular leader in the state. “There may be a few problems but as an opposition party we are very strong and Jagan plays the role of a very responsible opposition leader,” he said.

Member of the YSRCP political affairs committee and MP from Nellore Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, too, dismissed any threat to Jagan. “It is all false propaganda that Jagan is in trouble,” he said. “On the contrary, Jagan is the most popular leader in AP now. Anti-incumbency is growing in the TDP and CM Naidu is not as popular as he was when he won the election. The attachment of Jagan’s properties may be serious but we have faith in the judiciary… there is a long process to it. Politically, Jagan is more relevant than before as a responsible opposition leader who is ensuring that the TDP keeps its promises.”
Reddy accused the TDP of luring YSRCP members with huge amounts of money.
While Jagan still pulls crowds wherever he goes, the breaking up of the party is visible. Only a handful of MLAs such as Roja Selvamani remain loyal to him and YSRCP. And when Jagan is launching attacks on the ruling party, not many MLAs offer open support, apparently for fear of spoiling their chances in the TDP if the need arises.

“At the grassroots level, the party is rudderless. It just runs in the name of Jagan Mohan Reddy and YSR. District leaders and MLAs have little connection with the top leadership like Jagan or his mother Y S Vijayalakshmi who is the honorary president,’’ a YSRCP district leader from Guntur district said.
The YSRCP was once very powerful in the Rayalaseema region’s YSR Kadapa and Kurnool districts. Of the 11 YSRCP Kurnool MLAs, five have defected to the TDP, while in YSR Kadapa district, three of the nine YSRCP MLAs have joined the TDP.
