For Cleveland Clinic, arrest of Arab patient is potentially bad business City's big 3 hospitals in an overhaul HOSPITALS Clinic, MetroHealth, UH each look to improve care with expansions, better efficiency from A1 The exterior view of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi shows the multispecialty hospital being built on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi in 2013. It operates a Global Patient Services center on its main campus to help coordinate care, provide interpreter services, and help international patients get access to lodging and transportation during their visits. It also has opened a new hospital in Abu Dhabi, the capital of The United Arab Emirates, and is building another facility in London. The Clinic treats thousands of international patients every year, the health system's website says. But recently the system found itself in an awkward position after a patient from the UAE was arrested while trying to check into an Avon hotel. Police have since apologized to the man, whose brief detention was based on the unfounded suspicions of a hotel clerk, and declared it an unfortunate episode. On Tuesday, a spokesman for the Clinic, which has been providing stroke care to Ahmed Almenhali, cited patient confidentiality rules in declining to respond to questions about the condition of its patient or how the hospital network has responded to the incident in Avon. Spokeswoman Angie Kiska said HIPAA prevents the Clinic from releasing any patient information. "...at this time we have no information to share," Kiska wrote in a statement, citing the federal privacy law governing the release of patient information. Almenhali, who collapsed after his arrest and was taken to the hospital, has reportedly been staying in the region for several months to get care from the Clinic in the aftermath of a stroke. It is unclear whether he was previously a patient at the Clinic's facility in Abu Dhabi. He was dressed in a head wrap and traditional Muslim attire when police stormed into the Avon Fairfield Inn and Suites with assault rifles drawn. It is also not clear whether he was receiving assistance from the Clinic's Global Patient Services Center during his stay in the area. The hospital system's website says it assigns a "Global Patient Services" coordinator to patients when they make their appointments. The site indicates that those employees help international patients with every aspect of their travel and care at the Clinic. |
