We use state resources in everything we do - does a reliance factory not use electricity/ water ? Why is a temple different .. The only fear being articulated here is fleecing of Bhakts by private administration - if that happens hundi collections go down and correction happens ...or people vote with their feet and the number of visitors goes down .. What would be required for the older temples/ pilgrim sites is for govt to identify them as heritage sites with specifications on what can and cannot be changed, maintenance, renovation, accessibility and infra for visitors etc. But this should be applicable for all major pilgrim centres not just temples ... All these arguments about donga swamulu, corrupt ttd swindling money etc are not pertinent to the point of whether a secular state should control religious institutions. All those can happen even today. And just like today, they'll be booked for fraud. Otherwise the same arguments can be used to nationalize any public institutions like charitable trusts, sports bodies, churches, mosques and for that matter publicly held companies on the stock exchanges. For example, apple is a publicly held company controlling billions of dollars of cash. Would anyone (other than commies) argue that it be nationalized to protect the assets citing examples of Enron etc? The long arc of history points to the state becoming ever more liberal and secular. No one can stop this from happening. I heard the argument about some temples cannot sustain without the govt help. Ok, how about making the endowment dept an autonomous Hindu body like BCCI.
