Personal equations are for optics, and not central to success. It is certainly not a substitute for building leverage with key players, including naysayers. Let's say you want to build leverage with China. The time to begin is not a few weeks before the Seoul meeting, but at least two years before that, if not more. China may be interested in a bargain provided you have something to give in return that it values. | ||

We should not rush into battle before we have our strategy, including an exit strategy, in place. The Abhimanyu logic of getting into a Chakravyuh without knowing how to get out is folly. In last 2 years, My respect for Dr Manmohan Singh has multiplied. Imagine In 2016 our "strong" PM couldn't diplomatically achieve a fraction of what our "weakest ever" PM achieved in 2009. Despite the domestic political constraint of Hostile Allies & Facing "No confidence Motion" Manmohan Singh stood his ground & managed to ink historic Indo-US nuclear deal after getting the near unanimous waiver from IAEA & NSG. - China, DID NOT overtly & staunchly try scuttle it, Like it is doing now. So what has changed between 2009-2016 ? Our economic stature has shrunk ? No ! Has our impeccable record in the non-proliferation sphere blemished ? No ! Only thing that has changed is that instead of objective & result oriented Foreign Policy, our foreign policy is being guided by Photo-ops & PR. Modi's "grand diplomatic coups"in Switzerland, Dinner & Driving around in Mexico, Swinging with Xi Jingping in Ahmedabad & Hugs in Brazil are few examples of hollow "Modi Doctrine". As de-facto Foreign Minister, PM should put the national intrest before his own Interests & focus on managing our diplomacy rather than managing headlines 5 mins after your birth, they decide your name, nationality, religion & sect & you spend rest of ur life defending something u didn't choose. |
