Watchman's murder: many questions, few answers

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, AUG. 18. Notwithstanding the elaborate reconstruction of the scene of offence, investigators are at their wits' end to answer many tricky questions the mysterious murder of Loknath Shail, a watchman, in actor Balakrishna's Jubilee Hills residence has thrown up.

The first and foremost one was why did the offenders, who took away Rs. 50,000 in cash, leave a gold bracelet and some diamond bangles untouched in the table drawer of the film star's bedroom?

Strange coincidence?

A box, consisting of imitation jewellery - there is little or no chance of the offenders knowing if it was genuine or imitated - lying on dressing table in the bedroom of Mr. Balakrishna's wife, Vasundhara, too, was untouched.

"We are pondering over this peculiarity," said the Police Commissioner, R.P. Singh. The police believe that a fight ensued between the victim and the attackers for at least eight to ten minutes, an indication of which was given by the splattered blood along the 10-yard long narrow pathway.

The watchman of a neighbouring house, Jagannatha Raju, maintained that he heard a dog barking and loud cries of a man for help.

Incidentally, except Mrs. Vasundhara, none of the inmates of the house, including two workers - Anjaneyulu and her niece, Thirupathamma, woke up. Mrs. Vasundhara maintained that she thought it was neighbour's dog.

How did the robbers gain entry inside the building? "I told my maid to close doors and didn't watch if she bolted it from inside," Mr. Balakrishna's wife told policemen. The top latch of the main door was, probably, not bolted and the thieves could have opened it by simply pushing them, the police surmise.

Unusual aspect

Another aspect that baffled the police was the manner in which sniffer dogs did not go out of the house, but moved within its premises.

It was unusual that the suspected robbers did not carry any weapons and used a granite tabletop in the lawn to smash the victim's head. There was no disorder inside the house either indicating that the miscreants had not rummaged the house for any property.

Two beat constables of Jubilee Hills police station went to the actor's house around 1.30 a.m., signed in the point book and returned it to the watchman.

The policemen informed that nothing suspicious was found at that time.

Shail lives in a rented room in Jubilee Hills with two of his friends who work in Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Park.

It is learnt that Shail partied with his roommates till late on Tuesday night before coming to duty. The police are probing if any of the victim's acquaintances entered the house.

{now u know how yellow twisters twist both the stories}

HYDERABAD: A labourer couple escaped with minor injuries when the car being driven by the cine star, Chiranjeevi's son, Ram Charan Tej, hit the cycle they were riding in Banjara Hills on Saturday. Tej was arrested and released on bail.

Around 8.30 p.m., Tej was returning to his Jubilee Hills residence from a gymnasium. As he neared the Indo American Cancer Centre, he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and hit the cycle in front of him. Subsequently, he hit an autorickshaw and the car came to a halt after hitting a road divider, the police said quoting an eyewitness, a snacks vendor.

Off to hospital

The middle-aged couple -- Gopal Reddy and Yadamma -- fell and suffered minor injuries. Immediately, Tej left his car at the spot, engaged an autorickshaw and rushed the couple to Apollo Hospitals. He paid some advance at the hospital and got them admitted.

After treating them for the injuries, the doctors also conducted a CT scan on them and the reports were normal. They were discharged within an hour.

The Banjara Hills police booked a case under Section 337 IPC (rash and negligent driving). Gopal Reddy and Yadamma, natives of Warangal, were residing at Road No. 10, Banjara Hills. They were on their way to work when the mishap occurred. The Honda vehicle of the cine star's son got damaged in the accident.
