The team got to spend the day with a very special guest as the Scripps Spelling Bee Champion was invited to Valley Ranch to meet his inspiration, Dez Bryant. Nihar Janga is this yearâs co-champion of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. He made national headlines by throwing up the âXâ after he successfully spelled the word âgesellschaftâ to clinch the co-championship in May. Dez and Nihar, an 11 year old 5th grader from Austin, Texas, became fast friends during their day together at minicamp Valley Ranch. They both say they draw inspiration from each other. âThrowing up the âXâ when I correctly spelled the word was actually a spontaneous celebration. I wanted to credit Dez for helping me learn to not give up if you get a word you donât know. When I started watching football and I figured out Dez was a really great wide receiver â one of the best in the league â I really like him after that.â explained Nihar. âFor him to like me so much, itâs just unbelievable,â says Dez. âThis kid has made me want to work harder. Hearing his meaning behind the âXâ just makes me want to go that much harder. Itâs very cool. âWhen I saw him it was on my Twitter and I knew I had to check him out. Instantly I was like, âWow, this little kid is amazingâ. Man, thatâs the stuff that drives me when I see stuff like that.â Dez took Nihar to the middle of the football field at the end of practice so that Coach Garrett could introduce the Spelling Bee champion to the entire team. Earlier in the day, Nihar took part in Garrettâs press conference. Nihar asked the head coach to correctly to spell the winning word. Garrett replied that he couldnât even pronounce âgesellschaftâ, much less spell it. Did Nihar try to quiz Dez with any tough spelling words? âNo, thank goodness,â replied Dez. âIâm not anywhere near his level and Iâm not afraid to tell the world that. This guy is extremely amazing. Coach (Brett) Bech (assistant strength & conditioning coach) was out there trying to trick him with a few words, but it was easy money for Nihar.â Nihar says that when he plays football with his friends, he likes to play wide receiver, the same position as Dez. âFootball and spelling bees both teach you to work really hard mentally and physically,â notes Nihar. âIt helps you put in the efforts for really long periods of time. I got interested in spelling bees in kindergarten when my sister inspired me because she was studying for her school spelling bee. Now that I am competing, when the competition gets close, I study five days a week at least one hour per day. My mom helps me memorize lists of words and helps me know the spelling and the definition. That helped me a lot during the Bee.â Niharâs whole family looks forward to returning to North Texas to see the Cowboys play at AT&T Stadium this fall. âI told him that heâs coming to all the home games,â said Dez. âHe lives down the street in Austin, Texas so heâs free to come to all of them. I got him taken care of. We threw up the âXâ together today and weâll do it again.â | ||
