Searchers found the remains of a missing 2-year-old boy, who was dragged away from his family by an alligator near a Disney hotel Tuesday night.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings ID'd the child as Lane Graves, son to Matt and Melissa Graves of Elkhorn, Neb. He said he believed the boy was drowned. His body was intact.

Divers found the body about 10-15 yards from the shore, in six-foot-deep water.

Matt Graves wrestled with the alligator on the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon, trying to pry to child from the alligator's jaw, but came away only with scratches on his hands.

The family of four from Nebraska checked into Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on Sunday, according to a Disney spokesperson. They also have a four-year-old girl.

In response to reports the family was watching a hotel-sponsored movie near the shore, Disney said it hosts such events but believed the film ended before the attack. The family was sitting near the water, not swimming or wading in it, officials said.

Bill Wilson of New Harmony, Ind., said he watched the commotion unfold from the balcony of his room at the Grand Floridian on the resort's beach area. He said he didn’t know if a movie was playing beforehand, but heard screams and splashing coming from a darkened edge of the lake.

PICTURE GALLERY: A 2-year-old boy who was vacationing with his family was dragged by an alligator into the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14.

“I heard somebody screaming and yelling. I thought someone got in a fight,” Wilson said.”I looked over and here comes one of the lifeguards...The mother was there and she was frantic, running up and down looking.”

Demings said search efforts will continue until the child is found. More than 60 responders scoured the area using sonar, overhead in helicopters and in the lake on boats.

There are no signs warning of gators in the area, but there are notices posted against swimming in the lake.

It's unknown how many gators are in the lake, which spans roughly 172 acres and connects to other waterways.

Such attacks, especially with a toddler, are “very rare,” said Nick Wiley, executive director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Across Florida, alligators have fatally struck twice in the past year.

Most recently, in November, a 22-year-old burglary suspect trying to evade authorities was killed by an 11-foot alligator, the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said Matthew Riggins drowned as a result of the gator attack. He was missing his lower extremities and part of an arm, according to deputies.

In October, James Okkerse, a DeBary man swimming in Blue Spring State Park was dragged underwater while snorkeling and killed.

Duncan Dickson, a former Disney executive who now teaches at UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management, said the property's interconnected network of canals makes it difficult to keep gators out of the lakes.

“The team attempts to relocate the gators to the uninhabited natural areas as best they can, but the gators don't understand the boundaries,” he said.

“Normally, Seven Seas Lagoon is so busy with water traffic that the gators don't frequent the area. At twilight when things calm down can be another story. It is truly a tragedy.”

'Tough week in Orlando'

Hotel guest A.J. Jain and his wife traveled from Georgia to Disney for a conference.

“I'm just here to say a prayer,” he said. “I can't imagine what those parents are going through. It's been one tough week in Orlando.”

This is just the latest tragedy in the Orlando area within a week span.

Singer Christina Grimmie was killed after a concert at the Plaza Live Friday night. The gunman killed himself after shooting her.

Early Sunday, a gunman killed 49 people and injured more than 50 others at the Pulse nightclub. The gunman was killed by law enforcement as they raided the club.

Jacquee Wahler, Vice President at Walt Disney World Resort, said she was “devastated” by the event.

Officials believe the 2-year-old boy dragged underwater by an alligator in Orlando on Tuesday night is likely dead.

In a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said there was “no question” the child had died in the intervening 15 hours since the attack. “It certainly is not survivable at this point for him to be submerged for this period of time.”

Demings said the operation would now be devoted to recovering the boy’s body. “Our ultimate goal is to try to bring some closure to the family by recovering their loved one.”

The boy was in the shallows of a manmade lake near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa when the incident occurred, and Demings said there was a sign in the area indicating it was a no-swimming zone. “Disney has operated here now for 45 years,” Demings said, “and they’ve never had this type of thing happen before.” He says the company has an active program to euthanize alligators that appear in the water, and that it has been doing what it can to make the family comfortable during this operation.

Divers have been in the water searching for the child, and sonar technology has been deployed. Sheriff Demings expects there will be another press conference around 6 p.m., if not sooner, in which the victim and family will be identified.
