Rajusk:The transplant was done by Dr Hariprasad Kasturi, an anaesthetist, and Dr A Vineeth Suryakumar, an MBBS who graduated from a college in China, said Tamil Nadu Medical Council president Dr K Senthil. "We have issued notices to them. We have asked Dr Hariprasad why he did not stay in the salon till the procedure was completed. We have asked Dr Vineeth how he performed the surgery without being qualified. Hair transplant is a surgery and Vineeth is not a surgeon," he said.

A final-year medical student from the Madras Medical College died a day after undergoing a hair transplant procedure at a salon in Nungambakkam more than a fortnight ago. The incident came to light after the state health department forwarded a complaint to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council last week stating that a medical student who underwent a hair transplant at the Advanced Robotic Hair Transplant Centre in Nungambakkam on May 17 had died due to complications. DMS sources said the centre has license only for hair cutting and styling, not such procedures considered surgical. The transplant was done by Dr Hariprasad Kasturi, an anaesthetist, and Dr A Vineeth Suryakumar, an MBBS who graduated from a college in China, said Tamil Nadu Medical Council president Dr K Senthil. "We have issued notices to them. We have asked Dr Hariprasad why he did not stay in the salon till the procedure was completed. We have asked Dr Vineeth how he performed the surgery without being qualified. Hair transplant is a surgery and Vineeth is not a surgeon," he said. In hair transplant, the surgeon removes tiny plugs of skin, each containing a few hairs, from the back or sides of the scalp under local anaesthesia. These plugs are then implanted on the bald sections of the scalp. On May 17, it took more than six hours for Dr Vineeth to remove hair from the patient's scalp. In any procedure, an anaesthetist should be present throughout, but Dr Hariprasad had left the salon. When the follicles were implanted, the patient complained of discomfort. He was then taken to a nearby private hospital where Dr Hariprasad worked, and was given first aid. After that the medical student left for his hometown of Arni. The next day his condition deteriorated and his family took him to Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, where he died. "Hospital reports said that he died soon after admission due to multi-organ failure triggered by delayed anaphylaxis and toxic syndrome," said Dr Senthil. Anaphylaxis is a strong allergic reaction which can been triggered by anaesthesia. |
