Yeah, no point in trading painful knees for a sore back :-) especially since I have more travel after that.

Thank you for the inputs .. Got some quotes from the agents - will have to pick up the conversation after I come back from the Seattle trip ..

Tempted

I did the trip when I was student so took a very circuitous route and different means of transport. Delhi-lucknow-nepalgunj-surket-hilsa-taklakot-manasarovar- mt. Khailash.

Taklakot lo people who come via air are put up for a day or two to allow them to get acclimatized. So even if you fly in till ngari you'll just have to wait till you get yourself acclimatized so the choice is whether you prefer to sit up in a tent and twiddle your thumbs or take in the amazing drive.

Dodgy knees or not do the trek on foot otherwise just go till yam dwar and come back. Its much more steenous on a horse/yak and an added bonus is sour back & butt.

Actually anta motivation ledu - my interest is in visiting and experiencing the places .. Not really a salvation quest..that I think is on the inside ..:-)

Time and energy permitting I would have liked to do the trek so as to see some of the views and spots from Drolma pass - but for now I will be happy is I can drive up to yamdwar, sershong and come back :-)

Just a word of caution don't carry a lot of stuff for the manas trip because nthey don't allow you to have more than one piece of luggage. Do the jeep parikrama around the lake, some of the views are outta of da world.

The qinghai railway is the world's highest rail - and also it reduces the impact of altitude sickness as you climb up into Tibet - so that got added in ..it is not recommended you fly into high altitudes , rather drive in gradually and fly out if needed ... Trying to keep that in mind too..

Registration yes - the travel agencies take care of that - we are not Indian citizens so I guess that lottery rule is different..have too verify though ..will check the itinerary you posted :-)

You've to register for manas - mt kailash trip. I do hope you knew this.

Now coming to your req. best thing would be to make Kathmandu your base and fly over to nepalgunj for manas yatra. This alone will be a 10 day trip if you're keen on doing the parikrama trek if not it can be done in 6-7 days. Anyway Tibet visit also will be checked off with this trip kada malla separate deniki andi from Chinese side? Once back from manas trip fly directly to base camp drive is a big bore once youve been on the drive from nepalgunj to manas lake. Anyway from kathmandu fly to Beijing or shanghai and do your Chinese checklist.

Never been to Tibet but if monastaries are your thing then please visit Leh.

Yeah - Tibet has a lot of travel restrictions and you only get confirmation after you get to China - also need to have a tour planned/ booked - so working on the plan with some tour agents in China and Tibet ..also altitudes required acclimatization and adjustment times so it cannot be a fly in fly out cos you need to let your body adjust gradually ...

Rasputin:

True but the road on the Tibet side is supposedly better so duration is about the same ..

Looking at the map, it is probably a shorter route from Nepal (khatmandu) than from Lhasa.

Good luck with the trip. I don't think it's feasible for ppl with Asthma like me.

Anand_n:

Looks like you need 3 visas, for China, Tibet and Nepal

U.S. citizens must obtain a visa before arrival in China. You are not eligible for a landing visa.
http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/visas/faq/

For Tibet
Firstly, obtain a Chinese visa from a Chinese Embassy in your home country. To apply for a Tibet permit, you need to email the scanned copy of your Chinese visa and passport to a licensed Tibet travel agency. All individuals entering China must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months for a single or double entry visa and at least nine months for a multiple entry visa. This should also be the first step of travel to Tibet.

Planning to go this route China, Tibet , kathmandu..

then its okay.If you intend to enter Tibet via main land China u need to apply for your Chinese Visa from the Chinese Embassy .Once you land in china hotel, need to apply for tibet permit with your original passport.I guess Indians dont need any visa for kathmand. so that would be easy.

Base camp training everest? Are you trained earlier?
