Cocanada:

In economy, like sports, timing is everything.

1950 to 1989 - economy mottam control lo petti, ye company ni grow avvanivvaledu. And if a company had to survive, they had to side with the ruling party and earn bread crumbs. Bajaj gadu nenu year ki 5 lakh scooters manufacture chestanu ante, next day vaadi meeda IT raids cheyinchi, vaadi bend teesaru. Debbaki Congi ni lick chestoo koorchunnadu. But come 1991, desaniki daridram vachindi ani, oke sari flood gates ettesaru!! And I suspect there is a "IMF - global finance" angle to that. Else, they would have bargained with countries like US, UK on issues like immigration. My point is simple, 40 years ghoramaina conditions lo unna companies ni oke sari global competition ki sudden ga expose chesi, more than 50% of the companies divaala teese paristhithi teesukocharu. Ika agriculture sector gurinchi aithe cheppakkarledu!

Another important point you raised is interest rates and capital. Also please think about "how is capital created" .. you will get why I am saying the timing and way of liberalization is wrong. Not liberalization itself!! Antha matranike neo-capitalists ki kopam vasthe, none can help.

MNC temselves are not bad

but GOVT policies have to make sure that there is level ground

For American companies, capital is available at a very cheap rate from the banks. Indian companies have to pay high interest rates

Competition is always good. market close chesi pedite... 50 years ayinaa manaki undevi ambassador car, rajdoot bike

True nationalism would be letting people (each consumer/producer) decide whether they trade with foreign companies or not. Not impose some arbitrary limits that their campaign financiers want. No one is stopping the manch guys from not buying foreign brands or cheap Chinese goods. And they shouldn't be able to stop anyone else if they want to deal with foreign brands.

LOL .. To equate SJM and Hugo Chavez is jumping quite a distance!!

Jujung:

Glad that PV and MMS didn't pay heed to these guys and went ahead with the liberalization.

May be you havent read the article correctly. Bajaj and other industry folks were all for liberalization, but not the way "IMF dictated", but the way ASEAN countries way, where domestic companies got support from their govts!

Market is comprised of not just producers but also consumers. So, limiting the competition to producers inevitably means harming the consumers and also potential future producers. So of course, every business guy who made it by then, would actively campaign for regulations barring new entrants. There is nothing nationalistic here except their own self interest.

Wow funny to see the swadeshi manch (commies in the right wing) are still kicking around. Glad that PV and MMS didn't pay heed to these guys and went ahead with the liberalization. After 25 years of unqualified success of the reforms, one would think the commies would learn some lessons in economics. Instead we get this. Also read the glowing tribute to Chavez (another swadeshi idiot) and understand what's happening in venezuela now: http://m.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/the-passing-of-a-gia nt/article4482382.ece

Very very good read. After reading this, I have new doubts on what is Manmohan's (and PVNR's) integrity and what was his agenda in "1991 reforms" exactly. Why should Indian markets be given on a platter to foreign MNCs?
