Varma Producer: Sirish Presented by: Dil Raju Story, Screenplay and Direction: Anil Ravipudi Release Date: 05 May 2016 By giving a hit to Nandamuri Kalyan Ram with 'Pataas', debutant director Anil Ravipudi became a star overnight. Directing a mass movie so entertainingly, he showed that he has good talent. His second film “Supreme” with the tagline “Don’t Sound Horn” has been making news for its catchy songs like “Bellam Sridevi”. Since the movie is produced by Dil Raju, it has carried huge expectations. How does the film fare? Story: A greedy corporate broker (Kabir Singh) eyes on the lands of Jagruthi, a charitable trust in Ananthapur. The trust’s chairperson (Sai Kumar) fights against him in the court and the judge gives him a month’s time to prove that the original landowner has given the land to this trust. He heads in search for the landowner. Balu (Sai Dharam Tej), a taxi driver in Hyderabad meets an 8-year- old boy who lives on pavement. He brings the boy to his home. One day, the boy is kidnapped by an Orissa gang (Ravi Kishan). Balu along with his Police woman lover (Rashi Khanna) goes after this gang to save the kid. Why the gang is after this kid? Rest of the story is revealed later. Artistes’ Performances: Sai Dharam Tej has shown that he has ease in expressions. He is extremely good at dances, his steps in the remix song “Andam Hindolam” have matched to the steps of Chiranjeevi in the original song. But he needs to do something to his hairstyle. Raashi Khanna has kicked the butt in the role of an SI. Her role is aimed at pleasing the mass audiences and she does it well. Mikail Gandhi, the little kid, who played major role in the film, has made much difference to the regular proceedings. He is cute and has given best expressions. Ravi Kishan is perfect in the negative comedy role, senior actors Rajendra Prasad and Saikumar have excelled in their brief roles. Comedy by Vennela Kishore is hilarious. The “Amazing Zing Zing” comedy by Prudhvi and Prabhas Seenu is another hilarious track. Technical Excellence: Sai Sriram’s cinematography is filled with competent frames. The movie has not rich production values but some scenes are shot richly. Music by Sai Kartheek is a mixed bag, it has foot-tapping “Bellam Sridevi” but rest of the songs are ordinary. Action stunts are impressive. Highlights: Entertaining first half The kid sentiment Andam Hindolam song Zing Zing Comedy Drawback: Lack of novelty Too much of lag in second half Predictable scenes Analysis: Director Anil Ravipudi has used this script to showcase Sai Dharam Tej as a mass hero. In his first movie “Pataas”, the director has told an entertaining cop story. But this time he has picked up a very predictable story and has packaged it with entertainment, action moments, and sentiment scenes. The director seems to have been inspired by old Chiranjeevi movies. There is lot of references of Chiranjeevi’s movies like the kid sentiment is taken from “Pasivadi Pranam”, the Andam Hindolam song from “Yamudiki Mogudu”, the Lord Hanuman episode, etc. First half of the movie is highly entertaining with racy screenplay. The overall packaging of the first film will appeal to everyone. That sets high expectations on the movie at the time of the interval. But post interval, the movie goes down with predictable sequences and lengthy chases that hardly appeal. Since there is not much to look forward in the story, the second half turns tedious. The fight sequence shot on physically challenged persons could have been trimmed. Also the logic goes for toss here. Grip on the screenplay is lost at this point. What works in the film are the hilarious moments before the interval. The family drama involving Raghu Babu imitating Krishnam Raju is hilarious. Even the introduction of Raashi Khanna is very interesting, and her love thread with Sai Dharam Tej is engaging. Also the sentiment scenes shot on Rajendra Prasad and Sai Dharam Tej, Sai Dharam Tej and the kid Gandhi have worked out well. The director has truly grip on comedy and knows what works for the mass audiences. If only he has put focus on the second half, the result would have been much better. Overall, a routine action drama with some entertainment but predictability and second half has undone what it promised in the beginning. Bottom-line: Zing Zing Comedy |
