CONCLUSION: Most historians say Satavahanas are Brahmins or Vaishnava Brahmins [ I dont agree with Vaishnava Brahmins though..they had names like Lambodara, Shivaskanda, Shivasri and Skanda ].. Even Durga Prasad who wrote The history of Andhras whose book is mostly referred in the post of Vjavasi.... say Gautami Putra Saatakarni as Brahmin ..[ See Pg 41 of the book].. only esteemed historian KA Nilakanta Sastri [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K._A._Nilakanta_Sastri ] and his disciples or people from his school of thoughts say that Saatavahanas [ not only Gautamiputra ] are Kshatriyas.. and after reading many books I was connected with Nilakanta Sastri's version.. before that my opinion was that they are brahmins was based on books of smaller stature like CBSE and some other general history books which I read.. VARNA OF SAATAVAHANAS: Just because Saatavahanas patronaged Buddism does not mean Srimukha and other were probably buddist by faith... one must remeber Andhras even though followed Sanatana Dharma...they were open to alliances with Nagas and Yakshas..These Nagas and Yakshas are followers of Buddhism..probably to appease them they have constructed aaramas and donated lands to bouddha bikshus.. How can one deduce saatavahanas belonged to which varna...as I said "aryanization" of "andhra tribe" is already done by end of 4th Century BC...and they followed Sanatana Dharma..based on the Naneghat inscription by Naaganika Saatakarni performed 18 yaagas Nasik inscriptions of Gautami Balasri says Gautamiputra Saatakarani is eka brahmana [ which means Unique brahmana/ protector of Brahmana]...and he is known as Varna ashrama parirakshaka... if he is a Varna ashrama parirakshaka...then he being a brahmin can't be true..because only Kshatriyas can rule a kingdom by Varna ashrama dharma...so "eka brahmana" means " he is a protector of brahmanas".. more over if we consider all 24 inscriptions "gotra" of the king is never there.....[ kshatriyas dont have gotras only lineage like surya vamsham, chandra vamsam etc] and Srimukha and co have lineage of Saatavahanas..i.e., they belonged to Saatavahana vamsham.. If Saatavahanas are brahmins they would have got "gotras". like other brahmin kings ruled in their period or later stage [ like shunga, kanva, salankayana, pallavas] and queen " Naaganika" would have mentioned it in her inscription at Naneghat because of mention of those 18 yagas performed by Saatakarni.. Gautama Balasri inscription at Naasik says that she is a ideal wife of " Rajarshi" which can also denotes they belongs to kshatriya clan.. But another epithet in Nasik inscription says " khatiya dapa mana damana"...for Gautami Putra Saatakarni.. just like "ekabrahmana" word some consider "Khatiya" means Kshatriya caste and some historians consider it as a name of tribe... Gautami Putra Saatakarni compared himself with God Rama[ who is kshatriya kula tilaka] | ||

WOMEN IN SAATAVAHANAS: Some consider women have important position during saatavahana empire because of matronymic names of rulers.. because they use mother's name in front of their name[ which incidentally is ancestors same like Satakarani or Puloma/ Pulamavi].... In puranas we can see garuda is called Vainateya..[ son of Vinata]... Kausalya nandana for Rama or Kaunteya[ Son of Kunti] for Arjuna..there are numerous examples... But this metronymic names started only with Gautami putra Saatakarni..before him no saatavahana rulers used a metronymic name.. probably he introduced this rule it was followed by his feudatories like Ikshavakus who ruled Krishna godavari basins in later years.. Naasik and Naneghat inscriptions is the work of the raja maatas..Nagaanika and Gautami BalaSree..it just shows raajamaata enjoyed significant respect and authority.. [ this is some thing which we have since ages]....one cant just extend it to women of entire kingdom.. | ||

EMERGENCE OF SAATAVAHANA: With the decline of Mauryan Empire..an Andhraite king of one of those 30 fortified towns.. who belonged to kula/clan called Saatavahana..[ one of the meaning for this word is the person who rode Saatam..[ name of lion emblem of Yakshas]]...so they belonged to lineage of a king who defeated Yakshas...[ hence they belonged to Saatavahana vamsam like Raghu Vamsam] united entire Andhra desa and declared independence.. he belongs to place of Kotilingala present day Karimnagar...and after uniting the province he ruled from Prasthistana..modern day Paithan.. He is none another than Simukha in Prakrit...or Srimukha Saatavahana..after his death Srimukha's brother Krishna ruled Satavahana empire..both of them have aryan/brahmanical names !! Followed by Satakarni-I[ which is also a name of rishi] ... Satakarni-I perfomed two Ashwamedha yagas and 1 rajasuya yaga...Naneghat inscription by his wife "Naganika" [the marriage alliances with Nagas is still continuing] says Satakarni performed 18 yaagas..and she is daughter in law of srimukha and daughter of great warrior born in Angira family of Nagas called "Tranakayira".. all these incidents show they are followers of sanatana dharma / "brahmanism" from Srimukha itself.. | ||

/b{MAURYAN ERA:} Thus, by 4th century B.C. a composite society took shape in the basins of the Godavari and the Krishna in eastern Deccan and the entire region came to be known to the Mauryas as Andhapatha/Andhrapatha It is only in the Mauryan age that one gets historical evidences of the Andhras as political power in the south-eastern Deccan. Pliny , deriving his information from Indica of Megasthences, mentioned that the Andhra country had 30 fortified towns and an army of 1,00,000 infantry, 2,000 cavalry and 1,000 elephants. These Andhra kings are feudatories to Mauryan dynasty and that is why they were called " Andhra Bhrityus" or "Andhra Servants" a term which depicts superiority of Mauryan empire.. In the mean time from 4th Century BC buddism and jainism spreaded to present day krishna and godavari basins which reached new heights during Ashoka rule..Ashoka sent missionaries to Survangiri[ a place near Kurnool] a provincial capital of Mauryan Dynasty and many ingenious tribes like Nagas and Yakshas and looked down lower "varna" people converted to this new religion..and it continued even after the decline of Mauryan Empire because of tolerant kings... | ||

REAL HEROES OF ANDHRAS: In due course of time Andhras migrated from Borders of Aryavarta to Gangetic Plain .. Puloma is a andhra king who ruled magadha and gangetic plains..[ he is one of the reasons why I believed Andhra's are North east people...from northeast they migrated towards south .. and Magadha is one of the major places ..they are going to reach if they travel south.. ] and from here they moved to Krishna and Godavari Basins.. and "Andhra Maha Vishnu" a great warrior of Andhras...defeated Nagas and Yakshas ...to form Trilinga desa..[Kaaleshwaram, Srisailam, Daksharamam..] and ruled from Srikakulam , Krishna Dist..A temple is dedicated to him and is one of the oldest temples in indias..legend says he fortified his entire kingdom... it was he who made Andhra tribe a Political Power.. Even though andhras conquered native tribes..they followed some of their traditions..and had marriage alliances with Nagas and Yakshas.. and by the end of 4th century BC..Apastamba wrote Dharma , Grihya and Kalpa Sutras. Apastamba is a brahmin and belongs to a place between Krishna and Godavari basin..Even now most South Indian brahmins say "Apastamba Sutra" while reciting their "pravaras".. So by the end of 4th Century BC the andhra tribes are "aryanised"..If brahmins are present by then...so should other varnas like Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Sudras.. and hence ruling clans of Andhra tribe could be Kshatriyas..they had matrimonial links with Nagas and Yakshas.. | ||

WHO ARE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF MODERN DAY ANDHRA PRADESH: Nagas and Yakshas are the original tribes who resided in between Krishna and Godavari river basins.. Yakshas emblem is lion called Saatam...and they are worshipers of lion..probably a reason why AP have more narasimha temples than any place in india...Bhattirprolu inscription talks about King Kubrika aka Kuberaka...he is a yaksha..and some historians date him to the time of Asoka..some around 4th Century BC... Jataka Tales say that land between Krishna and Godavari as Nagabhumi..which means Land of Nagas..Nagas tribe is as old as dravidians..after the Aryans came to India and settled near Ganges-Yamuna, Nagas left the central India and settled in the various places, and Krishna-Godavari region in the South is one of them. The clashes between Aryans and Nagas is famous... remember SarpaYagam.. the fight between Janamejaya and Nagas. The indeliable impact left by Nagas is visible in telugus even now..most of us add Naga to our names..like Naga Lakshmi/Naga Shiva/ Nagamma/Nagayya..or acharya Naagarjuna [ of Mahayana Buddhism] and telugu people worship snakes on Nagula Chaviti...where as Northen Indians celebrates Nag Panchami..[ a victory of Aryans over Nagas] | ||

WHO ARE ANDHRAS?: If one sees map of Aarya Varta.. and co-relate it with what is written in Aaitreya brahmana.. [Andhras, Pundras, Savaras, Pulinda, Mitibas]...if you take by the order of places written in sloka.. 1) Pundra is a region of present day West Bengal, 2) Savara is a region of present day Jharkhand to Central Indian forests...they still reside there.. 3)Pulindas is a region of Central India 4) Mutibhas are tribe of Gujrat... The list of places is moving from East to West...so probably Andhras are from North East of India..!!! as they are nomadic in nature they defeated various tribes and moved towards South india...!!! This is just purely my speculation and my speculation doesn't hold any value because I am not a qualified historian... DB is a right place for my speculations though. or else they are most probably a "Central Indian" tribe..because Krishna Godavari rivers are very far from borders of Aaryavarta... only in the later eras the word "andhra" is added with geographical location in this order..Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Andhra, Dravida desaa...[ Here the geographical list is from east to south] this means original andhras who are North eastners moved to south by this time.. | ||

AITREYA BRAHAMANA: Aitreya brahamana..historians deduce it as oldest known source where the word "Andhras" come up.. they date Aitreya Brahmana at 600BC.. but the contents written in it might be older too.. For example the word Andhras come in a topic where raja harishchandra [ who is 54 generations older to Rama of Ikshvaaku] does yagna..and Sunahsepa becomes yagna pasu..Vishwamitra like courage of Sunahsepa and adopts him..a gives him a position of elder son..which is condemned by 50 elder sons.. Vishwamitra curses his 50 sons... " You shall have the lowest "castes" for your descendants.Therefore are many of the most degraded classes of men, the rabble for the most part, such as the Andhras, Pundras, Savaras, Pulindas, and Miitibas, descendants of Visvamitra."[by Martin Haug] Bhadiraju Krishamurthy in his telugu translation says... you 50 sons go and live with "unaryans" bordering aryavarta...One can see this incident as aryanisation of un-aryans..Andhras...These Vishwamitra sons..imparted aryan knowledge to all these nomadic tribals..This incident did not happen in 600BC..book was written then.. | ||

ANDHRAS REFERENCES: Bhagavatha 9 skandam 29 adhyaya says...King Bali[ not bali chakravarthy we know] of Chandravamsha had 6 sons... named Anga Vanga Kalinga Andhra Simba Pundra.. each of them ruled these places .. In the same bhagavatas 2 skandam 14 adhyaya 16 slokam this is written... " Kiraatas, Hunas, Andhras, Pulindas, Pulkasas, abharas, Sumbhas, Yavanas and members of the Khasa races, and even others addicted to sinful acts can be purified by taking shelter of the devotees of the Lord, for He is the supreme power. I beg to offer my respectful obeisances unto Him." This sloka in Bhagavatha shows andhras are uncivilised people... Andhras and other "uncivilised" countries participated in Mahabharata war and supported Kauravas.. which again shows according to author Vyasa ..the uncivilised countries supported adharama... Mahabharata mentions andhras many times during Rajasuya yaga or describing Sahadeva conquests.. | ||

"History as a subject of study is more or less completely at the mercy of its sources" is the first line in History of Andhras by Durga Prasad....it suits aptly when we are tracing history of satavahanas... Even going by conservative estimates Satavahanas ruled from some where around 350 yrs...and historians got only 24 inscriptions[of that period.. most of these on western side of present day Andhrapradesh[ including T too].. which caused conflicting opinions among historians..based on their school of thoughts... :-) Just like some debunk Aryan invasion theory and majority historians still proposes it...the same way debate about history of satavahanas will always be there till there is a conclusive evidence.. After reading many books....This what I deduce about history of Andhras and origin of Satavahanas... Folks enjoy reading this lengthy group of posts.. | ||
