In a major organisational reshuffle on the Nav Samvatar — the Hindu New Year — on Friday, BJP president Amit Shah appointed presidents in five states, including Punjab. The much-thought-of appointments have been made with one common denominator — the leaders' “non-upper caste” status and the ability to influence caste equations and their ”Sangathan” (RSS) background. The new State chiefs include Union Minister and Dalit leader Vijay Sampla (Punjab), former Chief Minister and leading OBC leader BS Yeddyurappa (Karnataka), Phoolpur’s OBC MP Keshav Prasad Maurya(Uttar Pradesh), Telangana Legislator K Lakshman (also an OBC) and former MP Tapir Gao(Arunachal Pradesh).
