Three months have passed since the monsoon season began on June 1 without proper rain in the upper reaches of the Krishna River. All reservoirs up stream Srisailam are nearly empty with Irrigation experts estimating that a minimum of 40 days were required for the dams in Karnataka to fill and water to flow to reservoirs down stream. According to the data given in the Andhra Pradesh Reservoir Storage Monitoring System the Telangana State began drawing water for power generation from Thursday and has diverted nearly one tmcft in two days. It drew 5,600 cusecs on Thursday and 4,470 cusecs on Friday. Telangana had been drawing water from the dam even after the level fell 54 ft below the minimum draw down level (MDDL) of 854 ft. Water was drawn from the dam right up to May 29 and using up between 1,800 cusecs and 2,200 cusecs. The drawing of water stopped only on March 29 when the level in the dam fell to 800 ft. With just 0.9 ft left for the level to fall to 800 ft the drawing of water continues at the rate of half a tmcft a day. While the full reservoir level of Srisailam Dam was 885 ft the reading of the level on Friday was 800.9 ft. The reservoir having the capacity to hold 215 tmcft had only 29.4 tmcft.
