It's socialism if government gets into giving free internet access which btw is one of CBNs' poll promises. Like getting a set top box and paying for set top box usage (poor example, I know)..... It's like, you buy data and then everything else is level playing field.... fb doesn't say what is basics and what is not.. anyone can get attached to free basics program. Check out babajob founders take on the whole issue. I'm divided on this one.... On the face of it, it sounds pro-user.... Let's take example of Reliance jio.... They are launching 4g services.... Now, they'd say... A basic pack comprising of some apps data is free.... I.e, if hike ties up with Reliance then you'd get to use hike messenger free and data you used on hike wouldn't get you charged.... Great.. but if you want to use, let's st watsapp, you'd have to buy data and use.... So, as Facebook says "free basics"... That us, everything considered as basics are offerred for free.... Great, so what's wrong??? Well, what is basics of internet?? We, as a user won't get to decide. Whatever Facebook or Reliance or airtel says is basic, becomes basic.... So, whoever small time players, let's say startups of sorts will get squeezed out of competition.... Unless these startups go bend in front of a major operator, they can't survive as they will not be available on free/preferential data. So , loss of competition, monopoly etc etc....
