Hi-tech CM's offspring designs car: Like father like son By V.Geetanath HYDERABAD, JUNE 1. Gleaming black, 7.5 ft in length and 4.5 ft in width and just little over two feet from the ground, the smaller than the small car looks like a cuter version of the `Love Bug'. The two-seater, six-wheeled car runs on petrol and is said to touch a speed of 80 kmph with a mileage of 20 to 25 kms per litre. And, the engine? Hold your breath! The sportscar like chassis has been mounted on a 150 cc engine of a scooter. And, the youngman behind this innovative concept car is a 17-year-old who has just passed his Intermediate - N. Lokesh, none other than the only son of techno-savvy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu. "I wanted to do something creative. Actually, I wanted to make a `Go-Kart' vehicle but later, I changed the idea to that of a car ideal for a city," he explains. He had a glimpse of the futuristic car models at the Auto Expo held in New Delhi last year where the idea got germinated. Lokesh has been working at it for the last nine months juggling with his studies. "I wanted to build everything from the scratch and I had a group of around eight persons, mostly car mechanics and decor designers, helping me in carving out the shape and mechanism". The present shape of the `smaller car' is the third prototype. "The first with normal iron broke down in two months while the second lasted for six months. It was all a trial and error method," he says. Though, still in his teens, Lokesh is well- versed with the functioning and mechanism of cars. He also has no qualms in accepting that his `dream car' is not a perfect one but a cruder version which needs to be developed further. "It has many flaws and can't stand the stringent international norms. I have not consulted any engineer or designer. There's lot more work to be done with it but I am proud of what I had achieved thus far," he claims. For instance, the car which is yet to be named, as of now does not have wheel alignment or a reverse gear or a hand-brake. Lokesh also points out that there are no axles connecting the wheels as it's a single-wheel drive. Most parts are that of a scooter and some belonged to the family's Ambassador car which was being refitted. Knowledgeable persons, who saw the car in its present avatar, felt the pick-up was low. "On the city roads why do you need great pick-up? Some wanted a roof but if it rains, just park it and hop out," he laughs. Yet, Lokesh vouches for its safety because during trials "we crashed it several times into granite". I can tell you its really safe and its low height will help balance the car," he says earnestly. The young man has always been passionate about cars from his childhood. "I read auto magazines and encyclopedias. Besides, I am also hooked onto the Net". It seems he used to tinker whatever gadget entered the house. Lokesh spent time working on his car on Sundays in the family farm house. Of course, there were several who thought he was being "foolish and crazy". "Very few believed in me but I had my parents' support," he says. The whole project cost him Rs. 40,000. "Well, I planned for less but I had to spend more to make it run". He's confident the future belongs to the smaller car. "In years to come, I am pretty sure it will be virtually impossible to take a large car out on the city roads". Still, he's not aware of permissions/procedures required to get his concept car running. "First, I have to become eligible to drive a car next year", he says. What was his parents reaction to his car? "My mother was aware of every move and my dad was pleasantly surprised when I unveiled it to him a few days ago," he says and recalls with a laugh: "He said if I concentrated as much in my studies I would have done much better in Intermediate". Lokesh has plans pursue engineering in the US and is presently preparing for his Scholastic Aptitude Tes. But, he vows to continue to develop his dream car. | ||
