Bluelagoon:

I spoke to the farmer, He is okay with sending 5kgs of navara. He wanted more than 400/kg as he claims it is natural and better than organic and hence difficult to cultivate blah blah. But for this time, I've asked for 400 price. So, that's cool.

Sesame oil 300/lt and minimum 5 lt order (actually the price is 250/lt when I went but as I am not going this time and asking someone else to do, price hike by 50/lt). Give me your quantity.

He said he will send it through Navata. Tell your nearest branch from here http://www.navata.com/branch-locator

The shipment will arrive on the farmer's guys' name in Hyd. Both of you meet at the collection point branch. You take your goods and pay him cash.

Think this is transparent enough, Let me know if you need any changes in this.

Give me your email so that, I can send the courier details once he ships them.

red rice and other natural products are too expensive and very very difficult to find...

everything isn't too expensive. Navara is a special kind, it's medicinal and it's almost extinct kabatti its pricey. I will get most of the 'natural' grains n lentils for ~'organic' price. even then, I feel if quinoa 'rice' in hyderabad sells for 1000/kg, no wrong in selling aboriginal rice for this price. Most of the creme I came across in Hyderabad who eats quinoa thinks, it is rice(cereal), Ala untadi vyavaharam.

I discussed quinoa with some natural farmers I know (keeping the demand it has now in mind), most of them are hell bent on not cultivating it as it's not aboriginal.

Vjawarrior:

Bottled water is more dangerous, you never know what it has , not all brands are equal, if you buy in walmart brand , it is mostly tap water

In 1999 the NRDC tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of water. (This is the most recent major report on bottled water safety.) While noting that most bottled water is safe, the organization found that at least one sample of a third of the brands contained bacterial or chemical contaminants, including carcinogens, in levels exceeding state or industry standards. Since the report, no major regulatory changes have been made and bottlers haven’t drastically altered their procedures, so the risk is likely still there.

The NRDC found that samples of two brands were contaminated with phthalates, in one case exceeding Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for tap water. These chemicals, used to make plastic softer, are found in cosmetics and fragrances, shower curtains, even baby toys, and are under increasing scrutiny. They’re endocrine disrupters, which means they block or mimic hormones, affecting the body’s normal functions. And the effects of exposure to the widespread chemicals may add up.

When exposed to high levels of phthalates during critical developmental periods, male fetuses can have malformed reproductive organs, including undescended testicles. Some experts link phthalates to low sperm counts.

Water bottles do not contain the chemical, which means the phthalates detected by the NRDC probably got into the water during processing at the bottling plant, or were present in the original water source (phthalates have been found in some tap water).

Bottled water is regulated for safety, but it’s a tricky thing. The EPA regulates tap water, while the FDA oversees bottled. Yet FDA oversight doesn’t apply to water packaged and sold within the same state, leaving some 60 to 70 percent of bottled water, including the contents of watercooler jugs, free of FDA regulation, according to the NRDC’s report. In this case, testing depends on the states, but the NRDC found that they often don’t have adequate resources to oversee bottled water, in some cases lacking even one full-time person for an entire state.

The FDA requires bottlers to regularly test for contaminants, but the agency considers bottled water a low-risk product, so plants may not be inspected every year. According to one FDA official, it’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the product complies with laws and regulations. Some bottlers turn to NSF International, a trade group that conducts yearly unannounced inspections of plants, looking at the source of the water and the treatment process, and testing for contaminants. Other companies belong to the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), which also performs annual unannounced tests to ensure the plant is up to FDA standards. IBWA has its own regulations, some of which are stricter than the FDA’s.

Bottlers don’t have to let consumers know if their product becomes contaminated, but sometimes they pull their products from stores. In fact, between 1990 and 2007, this happened about 100 times, says Peter Gleick of the Pacific Institute in Oakland, California. Among the reasons for recall: contamination with mold, benzene, coliform, microbes, even crickets.

In 2008 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) tested water in nine states across the country and found that 85 man-made chemicals, including some medications, were commonly slipping through municipal treatment systems and ending up in our tap water. Another report by the Associated Press found trace amounts of dozens of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water supplies of some 46 million Americans.

Mushin:

annai ee organic food ki scientific evidence ledhu ani aa madhya twitter lo edo discussion choosa....is it scientifically proved that organic food is more nutritious and better for health?

I dont know, I dont have to know. Let's talk logic! In actuality there is nothing called 'natural farming'/'organic farming', there was only farming in India until green revolution (ante mokka ki mandu kottadam). So, until that point when second world war weapon making companies started investing in food 'industry' and our independence-settling time and introduction of hybrids and pesticides, what do you think Indian farmer used to do?

These palekar, dabolkar etc did not invent new 'natural farming' science. They are just putting what used to be called traditional knowledge and scientific knowledge of ancient India in simple words. prior to kautilya ante 4th bc lo 'krishi parashara' book lo aadu paina nakshatram position chusi kinda ae panta eyyalo cheptadu.

After all this now, natural farming (or just 'farming' by ancient Indian standards) need not prove it to anyone. My ancestors had that food and lived peacefully for thousands of years. Correct ga matladukunte, tarvata vachina unnatural/chemical farming companies ae prove chesukovali that we also give the same nutrition compared to Natural food. Hope it made sense.

This is mineral rich land. aa himalayallo emi dorukutay saami, from Himalayan rock salt (saindhava lavanam, we are using this for cooking, read about it) to shilajit to magic honey (try googling about this honey, manam chuse bees ki 5 times untadanta, super strong aphrodisiac :D and OD aite poye ante powerful drug). ilanti nela ni nakinchesam.

places

Sponsored trips..investor visit to a hydro proj and Gangtok..

Naturally north east is rip-off on transportion, ee commercial effect antha andhra infra cos valle, across north east. Accommodation is manageable..

Fortunately could do corners of NE with others money.

Assam lo dibrugarh, tinsukia- explored quite a bit and were a changing scene of oil production hand-in-hand with organic breed of cultivation. NE way not be the same anymore after a decade later.

Arunachal is altogether a diff setup again. very rich ppl and most lazy bunch.. amazing organic fruit produce (pineapple and lychee). A friend did road trip to arunachal and escorted a truck load of lychee back through sensitive NE-Bengal borders

Nice ! are they cultivating these commercially ? how do they get to the market - is it only thru word of mouth ? Hats off to your passion !

It's a mixed bag. Most of them cultivate for themselves, and sell if there's surplus. My usual methods are 1.directly with raithu 2. direct with aadivasi 3. local Santha lu 4. shavukarlu in those area(seldom)

manam mana raitulu(not aadivasis) amayakulu anukuntam in general. I had seen farmers applying lil/no fertilizer for a small portion of their chenu, which they use for themselves. OTOH, i also seen some farmers mixing poisonous pesticides and sand with bare hands. Em cheppalo artham kadu, i think this is pure cultural confusion, they used to mix their fertilizer(peda, mootram, navadhanyal pindi etc) and pesticide(vepa noone, vepa pindi etc) with hands and continuing the same practices with petro chemicals.

I can see why villagers with abundant O2 are getting cancer like diseases.

Mario_puzo:

1. Navara Rice ( This red rice with nalla pottu, is 3000 years old and medicinal rice used in kerala ayurveda -google about it. Cholas or pallavas ate this rice, lol)
2. Various white rice from eastern ghats ( all of them are aboriginal, no chemical used)
3. Mappilla samba (white/brown) from western ghats
4. Nalla kandulu/Konda kandulu
5. Jonnalu/ragulu(millets) from onakadelli
6. organic sesame oil for cooking.

I am yet to go this year. I will most probably go end of this month and next month. Okate rakam rice/lentils guarantee ga dorike chances takkuva. But what I procure will be well researched and should be aboriginal seed and most importantly cultivated in natural methods.

Right now, I can for sure source Navara rice ( it is expensive, I bought it for 400/kg last year), sesame oil (i dont recall the price). Remaining all rice varieties will be cheaper and in the ballpark of 75-200/kg+shipping (Some will be much cheaper, like less than 30 a kg, depends how fortunate and well informed you are) . The lentils price varies according to season. I don't think I can get them for the same price I got last year.

Nice ! are they cultivating these commercially ? how do they get to the market - is it only thru word of mouth ? Hats off to your passion !

I stay in India. Navara doable, let me know the quantity you need.

coming to sesame, uttarandhra area llo nuvvulu pandinche vallu fertilizer eyyaru (normal villages kooda), vesina chala takkuva vestaru. but their land would be screwed already for other crops like rice. Nuvvulu ki urea avasaram padadu. I dont know about green revolution infested, water abundant KG districts' sesame cultivation though. So, if you have some one in villages of uttarandhra aadinchukovachu ganuga lo....Or i can get it, quantity needed.

nalla kandulu :-), ivi last year dorikayi......ee kandulu cooker lo pettaddu ani friend warning ichadu, peluddi anta, lol....we tried to cook it on gas as is, we couldn't, tried soaking them and cooking-couldn't.....so finally roasted them with cover, ground them and using as 'kandi podi', awesomestttt taste :D

bro.... What's wrong with hybrid varieties??? With hybrid, we are not talking about ge/gm stuff.... Plain old hybrid product of two diifferent original strains??? Trying to understand what sort of negative effects could be associated with these???

simply put, by definition hybrid is not natural.

Okay, lets talk about the objective of hybrids. Yes, naturally cross pollination jaruguddi and that's how India might've had 10k varieties of rice.

But when men intervened its a different ball game. annam mudda muppai saarlu namalali antaru, asalu 2 sarlu namilite break aipoye tindi tintunnam. Muppai sarlu namaladaniki sona masoori ki anta scene ledu, because the opposite is the intention of the it's creation . Most of the rice grains I am talking about you have to properly chew. In city humans are just resources for corporate and our time is a commodity, so a quick grain to cook and eat is understandable 'hybrid'.

Asalu inkoncham gatti ga matladukunte, 'aavu gaddi tintadi-peda estadi-peda nunchi gaddi ostadi' (only naatu aavu, jersey peda este gaddi bokka emi raadu) idi cycle. Nenu ae nela meeda naa kalla tho nadustunnano, batukutunnano aa nela meedi panta tinali, ade cycle, deeniki alternative ledu.

apart from that we have f2,f3 hybrids as well. To my limited knowledge, like GMos the seed's germination will be killed during the harvest stage. I dont know how much these f2 hybrid cereals/lentils/millets' penetration in India but, agriculture is a joke in this country. Experts already warned about illegal testing of GMOs in remote India.

I also went to western ghats last year but, cant procure much because of language barrier mostly. This year planning to visit food paradise sikkim if time and money allows.

I spent many nights inside a swiss army tent ( not just for food procuring, my life style). Perma culture workshops, lived in tribal villages seldom. Snakes is an issue though, i am trying to cross that fear barrier in me.

I started at the foothills of araku valley ( 20-30 villages) and went as far as onakadelli, jagadal pur last year in eastern ghats. I roamed for a month. I also went to western ghats last year but, cant procure much because of language barrier mostly. This year planning to visit food paradise sikkim if time and money allows.

thanks for the bump.

First things first. If you want to live natural, you should be sacrificing few things. Most of the authentic natural farmers cultivate 'local/aboriginal' varieties opposed to hybrid varieties.

So, sona masoori, hybrid toor daal etc which will be cooked faster/can be chewed faster will not be useful. again, as I mentioned in the thread, only people with commercial intentions will cultivate 'hybrid' grains. If you take example of rice, india has ~10,000 aboriginal varieties, yet we chose to eat hybrid grains as it is faster to cook and eat.

I have few things I am using right now, I procured last year.

I use, Navata or transport like that for shipping from source to my domestic destination. I dont know much about shipping to USA and costs involved.

This is not of any commercial interest to me. But I can procure for few more homes apart from myself, cousins and few friends for whom I am doing right now. That might reduce costs for me as well.

I can give you exact prices depending on required quantities and varieties.

Also, lil extra information: I started cultivating vegetables in my apartment in natural way. I am using two pot method to produce fertilizer from vaana paamulu ( desi origin). You can do in USA also depending on the state you live.
