Not at all...

Yes, backlight is not straining on the eye. I can't read with iPad no matter how low I go on brightness.

I thought Kindle's USP was that it is was not a backlit display and so the strain on the eyes was minimal.

Been using a Kindle 3rd generation Keyboard version since 2011. However, two days ago - it simply froze and stopped working. Amazon customer support says I have to buy a new device.

Now, apparently there's a paperwhite model that everyone's praising saying it has "back light".

So, the reading experience is similar to reading a book in an iPad? That's not what Kindle is supposed to be, right? Why introduce a back light when the purpose was to reduce strain on the eyes? I have to pay 100% premium on the basic model to get the backlit display! Why would anyone do it? I could as well use the Kindle app on my iPad to read it if I want back light?

About to place the order for the basic kindle. Just wanted to understand this whole puzzle.
