Mushin:

A clearly incensed governor, a former director of the Intelligence Bureau, jumped in, ditching his pre-written speech. Narasimhan went on a rant attacking Sahgal. "Freedom is a universal right but dissent is a subjective matter. It depends on how you interpret it," he said, using "family disputes" as an example to put forth his point. There is dissent within families too but you get past them, he claimed.

Sahgal, speaking first, stressed on the diminishing space for dissent in the country and how a series of "intolerant" incidents over the past one year -- from the killings of rationalist writers to the lynching of Akhlaq in Dadri - marked the rise of a "Hindutva ideology."
The murders "were not isolated incidents but part of the growing Hindutva ideology. It is time that we decide if we want to build modern spaces that are open to reason," said the writer who was the first person to give up her Sahitya Akademi award protesting 'the failure of the state to safeguard India's diversity'. She added: "There has been violence in the past as well. But for the first time the state failed to take a stand."

Sahgal's call to writers and artistes to take up the challenge and stop the "attack on Indianness" too appeared to irk the governor. He took off saying how "great" the nation was and how it was home to the richest language of all, Sanskrit.
The situation turned particularly ugly and humiliating for the writer when Narasimhan, in response to her comment on the role of cinema and how it can play a part in condemning social evils, almost unwarrantedly veered the discussion towards the police and held cinema responsible for showcasing them as the bad guys. "Often cinema shows police in the wrong light. That is not appropriate. Imagine the crisis we will be faced with if they are taken off the streets, even for a few days," Narasimhan retorted.
