Misinterpreting Ram Madhav’s comment on Akhand Bharat wasn’t the first time when Al-Jazeera stoked an unnecessary controversy. But its timing is noteworthy which can not only hurt India-Pakistan peace process but also India’s strategic interests in the subcontinent. While the world was pleasantly surprised and heaped praise on India as Modi dropped by in Pakistan for a surprise visit on December 25, the same day Al-Jazeera was singing an altogether different and unpleasant song. An Interview which Ram Madhav did with Al-Jazeera on December 7 was aired almost 20 days later and exactly on the day Modi tweeted about and visited Lahore. Prima Facie, the timing looks like a game of TRP but was it just that? It’s an irony that the Interview by Mehdi Hasan, who has been on several occasions criticized for flirting with religious fanaticism himself, was headlined as ‘Is Modi’s India flirting with fascism?‘ Mehdi Hasan – Do you want India restored undivided, with Bangladesh and Pakistan gone out from the Map? “Akhand Bharat means we want people to come together through popular goodwill and popular consent. This is a far cry from the ground reality. Mehdi Hasan is smart enough to know that. Now, this calls for a dig into Mehdi Hasan’s social, political and religious objectives and beliefs. Former BBC Journalist Tufail Ahmad tweeted today a 2014 column in The Telegraph on Mehdi Hasan by Activist Blogger Saif Rahman. The article exposes Mehdi Hasan’s hypocrisy and highlights why one should not consider him a Muslim role model. Mehdi commonly uses identity politics and accusations of Islamophobia & racism to obfuscate, divert or silence debate. He has a tendency to mock and deride moderates and reformers, revealing a more conservative mindset of his own. His Shia sectarianism informs his apologism for the Iranian regime, but he is prepared to set this aside when attacking the West more broadly here and to become an apologist for Sunni Islamism too. unfortunately any stance he takes against Islamism is mostly limited to Sunni Islamists, after all they persecute Shias too. A blogger at British Secular Muslims says, “British secular Muslims reject Mehdi Hasan’s obfuscation of Wahhabi and Deobandi Islamist terrorism against Muslims and non-Muslims†In 2009, Mehdi Hasan said: Al-Jazeera’s bias is no secret Al-Jazeera itself has been criticized for its biased journalism by nations across the world on several occasions. In 2010 WikiLeaks diplomatic cables leak, it was revealed that US Department of State internal communications claim that the Qatar government manipulates Al Jazeera coverage to suit political interests. Al-Jazeera’s biased reportage doesn’t leave India out if its ambit. In one such recent example, what was a case of police chasing smugglers in Himachal Pradesh, Al-Jazeera made it out to be an issue of a Muslim man “lynched†by a mob over cow protection. The news Channel has also been criticized for being state media owned by the government of Qatar. It has long been accused of being pro-Wahabi, pro-political Islam and of having a strong anti-Iranian and anti-Shia bias. |
