In fact the no. of public buses in Delhi has come down over the last 2 years by 20% from 6000 to around 4800 with old buses being scrapped and no new buses being acquired. In fact a city like Bangalore also has 6000 buses and Bangalore is half the size of Delhi. Nice - the 6000 new buses which is being stated are some temporary buses that are being taken on hire. In fact in a recent invitation for new buses, no one even submitted a tender. Getting new buses is going to take atleast one more year. | ||

Only 26% of Delhi's emissions are from transport and that too most of it is from Heavy duty and light duty trucks, not from cars per se. That being said, i totally support this, just to make the roads more uncluttered and city more liveable. | ||

India did not have a sophisticated weather monitoring system atleast for pollution. Last year the govt. started an AQI (air quality index) in diff cities, but half of the stations do not work. In fact the US embassy has a better tracking system. What i meant more specifically is that there is not enough data to suggest that doing the odd-even thing would work, in fact the data suggests otherwise - vehicle population is not the prime contributor.
More than garbage burning, a big issue is stubble burning in surrounding states. Ee cow belt idiots, harvest ayipoyaka, burn the stubble on the ground rather than ploughing and taking the stubble out. And the winds bring it to Delhi, that coupled with the fact that Delhi has the Arravallis on one side, make a cul de sac capturing all this smoke. National Green Tribunal passed strict orders many times on this, but nobody want to control the farmers. | ||

Good initiative, can get Delhi of the terrible car addiction it has. Delhi has more cars than all the other metros put together. Here people kill each other over parking spot fights. But unfortunately there is little data that lies behind this decision. The biggest source of pollution is actually construction dust, out of station diesel vehicles, crop burning in Haryana, Punjab and UP and all the industries around Noida, Gurgaon etc. Vehicle pollution is a smaller contributor. But every small bit helps and public transport has to be increases in the long term. No other solution. | ||
