unless u want to be a geek or at least pretend to be a geek, u can safely skip steps 2-6 and only do windows upgrade (step 1) as it will store the win 10 key in the mother board. you can download win 10 from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench and skip steps 2-6. choose option "windows 10" (good enough for win 10 home and win 10 pro) click confirm, it will ask for language, pick english and it will generate temporary downloadable links for both 32 bit and 64 bit. download the iso u need and use it later when u have to fresh install to SSD or new disk or even on the old disk. | ||

Aa media creation tool does exactly that creates a iso whic u can burn on a DVD or put on USB and use for resintalling Windows 10 and its simple | ||

if you want to install to new hard disk in case of hard disk failure or using a new hard disk? you need win 10 OS for installing that is where my procedure helps. Alternatively you can download windows 10 from microsoft but unfortunately you cant use it as it requires licensing which you can get automatically if you upgraded to win 10 earlier. | ||

u will get it once you upgrade to win 10. 1. Upgrade to win 10 and check that your system is activated....don't delete any files yet. 2. Find the Win 10 OS files under c:\$WINDOWS~BT folder. 3. You need ESD decrypter get it from files.fm/down.php?i=iwukmxu&n=esd-decrypter-wimlib-4.7z and uzip to a folder 4. Copy the ESD file from c:\$WINDOWS~BT to where ESD Decryptor is unzipped. 5. Run "decrypt.cmd" file as administrator and choose option 1 6. Win 10 OS installation ISO image will be prepared in the same folder. 7. Unzip this ISO file to a USB stick using 7zip or other tools and you have a bootable & installable windows 10 OS in USB stick which you can use for fresh installing. | ||

Now i can't even unwind to 8.1 as 4 months have passed. In between my motherboard crashed and after that all these problems accentuated. As Windows 8.1 came preinstalled on the laptop, i can't even install a fresh 8.1 as i need the product key which unfortunately is just linked to the motherboard. So without the factory motherboard, we are screwed..i might just have to wind back to a pirated Win 7. | ||

Vaddu, cheppina maata vinu, vaddu....my wifi connections have become very weak...beyond 5-10 feet signals catch cheyatledhu...does not read my external hard drive... Going back to Windows 8.1 is easy, within a month there is a quick button when you can just unwind. | ||

no need to do that, you can directly install fresh win 10. once upgraded, there will be a "esd" file and you have to convert that to bootable win 10 (you can have it on usb stick also no need for dvd) which you can later use for fresh installing. For the same hardware configuration the activation is automatic no matter how many times u install (no licensing issues). I did this, I updated to win 10 first and backed up bootable os files to usb stick. After that I replaced regular Hard Disk with SSD and installed fresh win 10 on it and the activation was automatic. | ||

You can create a iso and reinstall using that for a clean copy. The license is yours. With Windows 10, Microsoft doesnt show the product key. It stores your computers signature (based on CPU and Motehrbard ani janalu anukuntunnaru). When you reinstall it has your license in the database and will activate automatically If you change MB, CPU you will have to contact Microsoft and they will xfer the license for you I have reinstalled multiple times (new HDs) and it activated immediately | ||

think this way.... you are on windows 7. MS is offering free Windows 10 upgrade until end of the year. You upgraded to windows 10. If your machine is screwed up, you re-install windows 7 and then you *may* have to pay for windows 10 upgrade, in future | ||

you are upgrading from whatever (7 or 8). Why do you have to reinstall? Otherwise, go buy a copy of Windows 10 Retail and you can reinstall any no.of times | ||

I am also on the fence to upgrade my (one desktop, one laptop both with win7. Another old desktop with win 8) to get the free upgrade offer which is expiring by end of Dec. BTW, I had Win7 Ultimate version and Win 8(not sure which version, this is an upgrade license from the Win 7 Ultimate). Now in order to exploit my existing Win7 and Win 8 free upgrade offer, do I need to upgrade BOTH licenses and get two new Win 10 licenses OR just only one Win 10 upgrade license that I get? How does this work? | ||

when you upgrade to windows 10, it will have all the files needed to create bootable/installable fresh windows 10 image for installing windows 10 later from the scractch. Is this what you are asking? | ||
