You have replaced your father as the biggest telugu star. He must be a proud man. He is very, very proud and I see that happiness in him and that makes me work even harder. When Srimanthudu did very well, I went and met him in his house and he would say, 'This film collected so much of money here, beat that record there.' He loves it if my film does well and for him it's very, very important that my films do well. | ||

Talk about your grandmother? Even though my father re-married, he would come and live with us very often and he was always there for us. My mother and grandmother's age difference was just 13-14 years so they were the same age group and were more like sisters. My grandmother was thus the lady of the house. She took care of us and had a strong presence in our life. I love telugu khana and my grandmother knew all my favourite dishes. But unfortunately after she passed away, no one can make that food. | ||

Are you competitive? Very competitive, but I also understand that we all have our own space, be it Charan, Prabhas or me. There's a lot of space for everyone to be there. But competitive in the sense that I like to compete with the films I do. So if Srimanthudu was like this, my next film has to be even better. But I don't want to compete with other stars. | ||

Which was the lowest period in your life? There was this phase in 2006 when my film Pokiri became an all time industry hit and post that I got confused and scared and wondered what I would do next. I had just got married. My son was just a year old and my grandmother (my mother's mother) passed away. My grandmother was the one who had actually brought me up. Both Namrata's parents also died of cancer. Then a few films of mine did not do well. When all this was happening, I took a break and for three years, I did not have a release. I didn't work and everybody around me was getting scared. But I started liking that phase as I spent a lot of time with my son and grew as a person. I would not go out of the house and would just go to the gym, read and took my mind off films. But I started doing a lot of endorsements at this time so the money was okay. But that break did magic for me and I changed as an actor and emotionally it made me strong. | ||

Talk about your wife Namrata. We got married in 2005 and we were dating for four years before that, so it's been 14 years that we have been together. The one thing I like about her the most is that I am myself with her. And that was the case even when I was dating her. I don't have to say something to her to make her happy. Even when we go for a holiday, I do my own things, she does her own things. It's very chilled out and we are more like friends. I am very, very happy that she is in my life as she takes care of everything for me and in that way I am very lucky. I am very bad with finances (just as I was with Maths) and don't know anything about that. I can just concentrate on my work. Also she is very good at it and all the money is in her hands and she decides where to invest it. She negotiates the monies, my work is to just act. I think she too likes that I am who I am and am simple and normal and that I don't carry my stardom home. | ||

You are among the rare stars who are loyal to their wives... I don't have the energy, to be honest. Once you are married and have your children, I think that's the most beautiful life and then you are committed to your work, these thoughts don't go into your head. And I feel it's very immature to let these thoughts go in your head. I don't think mature men will be not loyal to their wives. Men who are not loyal to their wives are foolish. | ||

So what do you do post a flop? I don't go out of the house and just go into a shell. I don't talk much and for 2-3 months I am off. When you do a film, you don't think that it's not going to work. So it hits you very hard when it doesn't do well at all and it hits you even harder when they say it's a disaster. For 15 days, I feel so depressed that I don't even want to get out of bed. I don't feel like eating or talking. If you go for a family holiday, you are really not there. It's very disappointing and you can see it on my face and my body language. I introspect that time on the mistakes I made and what I should not make again. That's also the good thing about me. If a film does not do well, I take the blame. I say, 'you didn't do well now make sure you don't repeat that mistake'. I learn from it and try and come out of that in my next film. My previous two films didn't do well at all. |
