http://www.niticentral.com/2015/11/18/academicians-hit-out-a t-leftist-scholars-hypocrisy-336883.html Leftist Monopoly on Indian History Challenged A group of 47 senior academicians have accused âleftistâ scholars of constructing an âorchestrated campaignâ aimed at claiming high moral ground over the issue of intolerance. Online Petition against Left's distortion of Indian History https://t.co/6hurhVimA8 â Offstumped Report (@offstumped) November 18, 2015 These academicians have pointed out that the closely-linked statements (by the scholars) appearing with clockwork regularity in India and abroad are a well-orchestrated campaign âto create a bogeyman and cry wolfâ. âThey (statements) are neither intellectual nor academic in substance, but ideological and, much more so, political,â the academicians stated. They also alleged that the leftist scholars had engaged in various unscholarly and abusive practices and have ignored the work of generations of Indian and Western Indologists. In a public statement released, the academicians associated with various prestigious institutions said that as historians and archaeologists they wanted to respond to the scholarsâ âhypocritical attempts to claim moral high groundâ. The statement said that on October 26, 53 Indian historians had voiced alarm at what they perceived the countryâs âhighly vitiated atmosphereâ and attempts to impose a âlegislated historyâ. This statement, they said, was followed by an open letter from overseas historians and social scientists warning against a âdangerously pervasive atmosphere of narrowness, intolerance and bigotryâ and a monolithic view of Indiaâs history. Many of the signatories to these two statements, they claimed, have been part of a politico-ideological apparatus, which has come to dominate most historical bodies and imposed its blinkered view of Indian historiography on the whole academic discipline. Terming the followers of this school of thought as âleftists,â who preferred to dismiss dissenting Indian historians as ânationalist or communalâ, the academicians have also accused them of inheriting colonial historiography, with a reductionist approach, who have completely ignored Indiaâs knowledge systems in every field. âWhile we reject attempts to portray Indiaâs past as a glorious and perfect golden age, we condemn the far more pernicious imposition by the leftist school of a âlegislated historyâ, which has presented an alienating and debilitating self-image to generations of Indian students, and prompted contempt for their civilisational heritage,â the scholars said. The statement contained the names of among others Nanditha Krishna, Director, CPR Institute of Indological Research; Dilip Chakrabarti, Emeritus Professor, Cambridge University; Madhu Kishwar, CSDS and O P Kejariwal, Central Information Commissioner and Nehru fellow. |
