shourie is undoubtedly top intellectual in the right wing...too bad modi sidelined him...but the statements he is making now are way below his stature....

Heard that Shourie meets Modi once in a month and both of them exchange their views. The word is that RSS is against giving any position to Shourie.

And you should listen to these people rather than dismiss him as disgruntled or petty.

I did listen and hence decided that he is disgruntled/bitter and so petty. India lo church attacks jarugutunnayi (which itself is a lie by sickular media around Delhi elections) .. so India ki investments raavu annadi Shourie ne kada .. did you listen to that? do you want to support that pettiness?

Their main business was international calling - "Videsh Sanchar". They used to have a monopoly. Nobody could call internationally without paying their crazy international rates. The govt. divested VSNL as anyway the monopoly of VSNL was rendered redundant as people had anyway started using the their mobiles to do international calls.

vaake, got it. thxu, i thought they also had internet ...

Are you the only guy who has that information, otherwise the current market price should capture that potential. If everyone realises that the company has potential, the price would automatically move to 40 and not 20.

ok, let me try .
If I offer you 10-20% premium , there is no compulsion that you should sell. Its because you think over the years you are getting more value.

My point was, what was the hurry for govt to sell VSNL? was it really loss making back then ?

Why not, ippudu FB 20 unte, if someone offers you 40, why would you not take the offer? The share price of a company is supposed to capture all information about the company. So if FB is at 20, that means the price of 20 reflects all future growth.

you would not take the offer when you know it has lot of potential?
again, my FB comparison is way off

VSNL ki internet ki sambandham enti??

Regarding BSNL, it is unfair to criticise the govts that they killed BSNL

maa family and frds max bsnl lo work chesaaru. i may have a biased view , but there were incidents where proposals here would get implemented by ril and airtel before hand.

So, why would the govt. sell a growing company ante - the govt. has no business being in businesses whether it be telecom, watches, hotels etc. Nothing more. If you do, you are nothing but a socialist country. The only countries where govt. run companies do well is where there is very low corruption and and high compliance like Singapore or totally thuggish countries like China or Russia. Govt. run companies are just incompatible with a capitalist/ democratic/ liberal country

Regarding BSNL, it is unfair to criticise the govts that they killed BSNL. They did get a lot of their spectrum for free. They just did not run an efficient ship, in my view. But the jury is still out on that. What happened to the companies (even the Navratnas) that the govt. did not divest over the past 10 years - and check out the broad market performance and they would have done very badly compared to the broad market and also peers.

Btw, the market price of VSNL was 158 at that time, the govt. took our excess cash as dividend (nearly 2000 crores), took out surplus land, and then got Rs200 per share.......the Govt. got a very fair deal..

In fact left to itself VSNL would have withered away by now, like how BSNL is on its death bed.

do you think BSNL died due to incompetency or deliberate effort by govt to help pvt players?

At the i-bank i was working with, we were closely involved with some of these deals and my seniors used to work closely with the ministry. There was 4-5 big disinvestments those days - VSNL, Hindustan Zinc and Balco (bought by Sterlite), ITDC hotels etc

In VSNL, the govt. actually treated 770 acres of land as surplus land that the Tatas could not get control of. The govt. still has that land. UPA govt lo aithe, free ga ichchesevaru :-)So the deal was fair and transparent, the article just quotes some usual negotiations that happen in any deal.

http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/dot-to-hi re-consultant-for-vsnl-surplus-land-114101500932_1.html

I can assure the process was solid and robust with little external pressure. The 2000-2002 were very bad days for the Indian economy and in many of these cases, there was no second bidder. For instance, take Hindustan Zinc which Sterlite got at a ridiculous price.

Even in Balco, it was a similar case or there was a second bidder at half the price, if my memory serves me right. Even the Birlas or Ambanis did not bid. And so, the price it paid at that time appeared to be fair.

But when the commodities boom happened from 2003-2008, HZL proved to be a diamond for Sterlite, that nobody could have foreseen. I have even visited some of those mines in Udaipur as we were advising a competing bidder who dropped out midway through.

Modi is like Jesus - he raises the dead like the Congress annd the Left....(am trying to get the Hindustan times article link)

Kummesadu - i have been a ardent admirer of Shourie since the mid 80s when he was the torchbearer (at the Express) against the Congress.

Anti-congress, anti-left, maverick and unconventional, not kowtowing to established beliefs about Ambedkar (in Worshipping False Gods), did a stellar role in the Vajpayee govt on disinvestment. He is the kind of intellectual, right wingers you need. And you should listen to these people rather than dismiss him as disgruntled or petty. To anyone who has tracked his personal life and his family, he has seen a lot more glories than what a ministership can give him...but the Modi admirers will not listen...
