AT A time when the Congress is battling charges of turning a blind eye to corruption, a Hyderabad local court’s directive to the Andhra Pradesh government’s anti-corruption bureau (ACB) to register a case against former chief minister K Rosaiah and 16 other persons for their alleged involvement in a land-scam in the state Capital is expected to make things difficult for the ruling party in the coming days. Rosaiah has come under scanner following allegations by a group of petitioners that nine acres of land, located in the Ameerpet village and mandal of Hyderabad, was handed over to a private party by him when he was the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. The plot of land, which was in the custody of the state government, was said to be worth 200 crore. The petition against Rosaiah and others has been filed by an advocate, Mohanlal, in the ACB court in Hyderabad. The court had on Monday directed the bureau to submit a report on the subject before January 28. The development couldn’t have come at a more inappropriate time for the Congress. Not only it is likely to offer more ammunition to the Opposition in its campaign against the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre for giving a fillip to corruption, but it is also likely to puncture the Congress’ tirade against Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, and his party, the BJP. Like Rosaiah, Yeddyurappa too was accused of denotifying government land in Bangalore, and transferring them in the names of his sons and other close relatives. Confronted with the land-grab charges, the Karnataka chief minister, however, refused to resign from his post, thereby giving a handle to the Congress to beat the BJP with. The Rosaiah episode, however, threatens to put the Congress on the back-foot once again. According to the petitioner, the land in question had been bought by GN Naidu and a few others from the landowners in 1997 after the land acquisition notification was issued. But in 2010, following a representation from Naidu, the state government withdrew the land acquisition notification and handed over the land to Naidu in an unlawful manner, the petitioner alleged. The property was then handed over to a private developer for the construction of a district commercial complex. The petitioner said the even the Andhra Pradesh High Court had earlier rejected the representations of Naidu and maintained that the land once acquired could not be given back. Rosaiah had only recently stepped down as the chief minister, citing his age and health related reasons.
