The body of 18-month-old Vihaan Pullamsetti was found about 9:40 a.m., Israel told reporters at the scene. "Tragically, our worse fears as a community were realized," he said. "Young Vihaan's body was discovered in the canal." About an hour before Israel made the announcement, volunteers who came to the area to assist in the search were seen leaving - some of them were crying. Family spokesman Kishore Ambatipudi said the boy was "a very loving child, a very active kid," and that his parents were grappling with the sudden loss. "I don't have any words to explain how devastated we all are," he said. "The mom and dad are very devastated [and] we are trying to give them the strength that is required now." Vihaan Pullamsetti Vihaan Pullamsetti was last seen in the area of the 400 block of Lakeview Drive in Weston. He was last seen wearing an orange and blue striped shirt and camouflage shorts. His family was visiting from the Tampa area and discovered their child had vanished as they were preparing to leave. Bloodhounds, helicopters and divers searched near the 400 block of Lakeview Drive for more than five hours Sunday night, said Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion. Deputies remained at the scene on Monday and a dive team, which suspended activities about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, resumed a search of nearby canal waters Monday. The city of Weston used its Twitter account Monday to post a message for volunteers who want to assist in the search. The tweet said the Broward Sheriff's Office would coordinate volunteers in a search grid from the 400 block of Lakeview Drive where Vihaan first went missing. Missing Weston child Broward Sheriff deputies and local volunteers search the Racquet Club Apartments' grounds for missing 1-year-old Vihaan Pullhamsetti (Wayne K. Roustan, Sun Sentinel) Allan Wunch, 67, of Weston, drove over to the Racquet Club Apartments to help. "I heard they were looking for volunteers," he said. "I want to look for that little dude." The sheriff thanked those in an "amazing community" that joined the search. "This community looked throughout the night," he said. "Many folks didn't go to sleep [and] kept looking with flashlights in just an amazing outpouring of love and compassion and affection." When Vihaan's mother and father noticed he was missing, they searched for about 20 minutes and then called 911, officials said. "Like any family, they began frantically looking for their young son; they got others involved," Israel said. Vihaan usually takes a nap in the late afternoon, and some people in the apartment may have thought that's where he was, Israel said. A neighbor said there was a birthday celebration, with about 10 children, at the apartment in the afternoon. It was unclear late Sunday how the boy got out of the apartment. At 9:30 p.m., deputies conducted a door-to-door search of several nearby units. Groups of residents carrying flashlights combed the area containing long rectangular apartment complexes and numerous wide canals off Lakeview Drive. Tall shrubs and shade trees line the winding street. Neighbor Melissa Giminez said she felt proud of the response of the community in coming out to help search for the boy. "The family is going through so much right now, so they need to feel that everyone here is behind them," said Giminez, who participated in the search. Police called out "Vihaan" from their cruisers and residents were also shouting out the name as they check through greenery surrounding the complex. Israel said that authorities have "left no stone unturned" and have searched extensively, including with divers in the murky canals that frame the complex. |
