Pulses crisis: Only AP, Tamil Nadu foresaw it; acted timely

Vibha Sharma

Tribune News Service
New Delhi, October 14

As the common man bears the brunt of soaring costs of pulses across the country, the fact is that none of the states, except Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, had the foresight to see the impending crisis and to put forward their demand for the essential food items with the Centre.

Officials from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, claim despite several circulars and video conferences with state administrations, only these two southern states sent in a âfirm requestâ for their requirement of imported âdalâ to fill the shortage gap. No other states, including Delhi, evinced interest in taking imported pulses during the video-conferencing exercises conducted by Consumer Affairs Secretary C Viswanath, they say.

âIn spite of the alerts by the Centre about possible hike in prices because of the poor monsoon, state governments failed to take corrective measures,â an official said.

According to officails, circulars were issued and video-conferences held, but a âfirm requestâ for imported Tur and Urad dals were only received from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Therefore, it was decided in an inter-ministerial meeting on September 21 that the first tranche of imported dals arriving at the Chennai port and the JNPT, Mumbai, be allocated to these states
