Since your tickets are with air India, if the date you look and the tickets are available in the same class you purchased, air India charges only $150. You can get this done on call or visit air India office in Hyderabad. The fare difference will be charged only when the class is not available. You can always try, This ticket is still valid for travel until 1 year from the date you purchased the ticket. The travel should be before that. since you get refund from insurance not from airlines, you will get full refund. Airlines will deduct cancellation fee and give the remaining amount, provided the ticket is refundable. Else you wont get anything. Kayak/airlines will allow you to use the cancelled ticket for any future travel upto 1 year. but that will include rebook fee and fare difference. This is not worth. Cancellation of ticket is required for refund purposes also. Once you cancel you can claim refund. When you claim refund of the ticket from insurance you will get full money of the ticket value. For now just go ahead and cancel the ticket calling airlines or Kayak, whichever is faster.. Since you get full refund, get a new ticket after getting passport. this is true...my friend used my credit card to purchase tickets to india and had to cancel because the houston embassy did not give them their passport in time.... 350$ dollars deduct chesi rest of the amount was debited to my CC...you wont paying be paying any money extra... so talk to the agent and see if you get the remaining money back...sometimes they dont give you citing some stupid reason | ||

nothing happened as far as i remember...most people suggested that it was better to cancel and atleast inform the airlines...they said it was for security reasons or some other administrative purpose... I got frustrated because the airlines kept asking for an exact date to pospone the travel which made me pixxed off...basically they wanted me to pay some300$ charge for a certain date and I wasnt sure whether I would get the passport I dont think they give you any money for cancellation... I dont have any experience with travel insurance and how it works I would follow OTs advice

I just talked to AI agent, please let me know if this is true. He said cancellation will be $300 per head and will be deducted from the ticket fare that was already purchased. Rest of the amount for refund should be claimed by talking to the travel agent. Idhi correct info ne ichaada vaaadu...if yes, no problem in canceling and will book only after i get my passport. few yrs ago same problem...Visa got stuck in admin processing ...did not bother to rebook at a diff date...when you want o postpone your travel date they ask you for the exact date and also charge you..you never know when you get the go ahead from the consulate processing and get your passport...so did not bother to cancel my ticket either...waited till i got my passport then booked ticket...650$ boxxa but atleast had mental peace | ||

You can call school and let them know. That is not an issue at all. Or ask some one here to call the school. Its no big deal at all. Withoug passport, it is not recommended, but you can take a chance if you are fine with 150$ penalty per ticket. normally you wont get it on Friday if you didn't get an update today on DS-160. Options with you are cancel ticket to rebook on the same ticket thru airlines. Non-refundable tickets will not get any refund unless you have insurance or some critical issue like health and others which airlines will honor. However you can hold on to the ticket and rebook to save money. But if new ticket is cheaper than rebooking, better do that. First you will need to talk to airlines and let them know.
