if none of the teeam has expertise, then god bless that project.

If that's the case, first thing you should be doing is to fire Platy on the spot. An enterprise architect should keep in mind the skillset of his/her team before zeroing on a technology stack. :-) Or give them ample time, training and then implement. In that case too, your GTM is adversely affected and you have to fire Platy for delaying the project.

Kindal:

With previous experience in using different stacks, you can start, but while confronting with issues like optimising, improving the performance, etc., the specialised knowledge won't be easily available on internet. We may get that from either training by an expert or books. Under those circumstances, were the learnings from books useful?

Thanks annai lu

Imagine your team architect, say Platy annai, proposed a new stack for a product development. Both of you are clueless about it. With previous experience in using different stacks, you can start, but while confronting with issues like optimising, improving the performance, etc., the specialised knowledge won't be easily available on internet. We may get that from either training by an expert or books. Under those circumstances, were the learnings from books useful?

Personally, I rely on my company's internal site as well as Lynda. There were occasions when I got the best teaching from a youtube video as well.

Agreed Lynda is very good and youtube is very handy.

Platypus:

The way technology is evolving these days, especially in the cloud computing area which is funding my bread right now, by the time a book is written the content is already out of date. So I rely on the resources above and the blog posts that explain the developments. Finally, you can't keep up with the changes 100%. Don't even think about it. It is only when you have to solve a particular problem and that requires expertise in a couple of areas, you have to look at the latest resources in those areas on the net, and devise your own strategy

Another point - what works for one case, may not work in another. So the strategy keeps changing depending on what you want to learn

You may be way ahead of the game. Early tech adapters will struggle with the information gap and it's challenging to provide knowledge resources to them. What if your team is dependent on manager/lead on knowledge resources, what if they are inadequate? Those problems are tough to address.

>>1. With the costs of training shooting up heavily, if not books, where do you get good expertise on these advanced technologies and programming? Where does books fit in your learning path?

Mainly online courses. For us, we have an internal site that keeps on getting updated with training courses. For the general public, there are online educators such as Lynda.com, itpro.tv, edX, courser that teach programming/whatever is the tech topic you are interested in.

Personally, I rely on my company's internal site as well as Lynda. There were occasions when I got the best teaching from a youtube video as well.

>>2. As many of us are in Tech/IT industry, we are either involved in coding, managing, leading and delivering the projects. It is inevitable that we have to keep ourselves updated with advances in technology and programming plays a vital role. How are you learning? What do you expect from the programming and technology books? When your team or freshers require training, if not books, to what resources do you point them to?

Driverramudu:

For me programming books like geetha or khuran or bible
1.A buy the best or good books and also make use of technical forums or various websites to get to know practical implementation of it.

2.A. I always prefer learn more you don't know which one is required in future. Anyway learning more knowing more does not cause you any problem. And more over conceptual learning is the best start with and the go for implementation wise. Coming to those who would wann go purely management wise by no more technical side then it makes sense avoiding technical stuff otherwise
I suggest reading books and making use of Internet go through technical forums and websites

Bottom line is this I do follow the same order books, websites and forums

Thanks anna! This is very valuable. Here comes another question for you :-)

Kindal:

I came across these article on discouraging reading the programming books for programmers.
http://blog.codinghorror.com/programmers-dont-read-books-but -you-should/

http://blog.codinghorror.com/do-not-buy-this-book/

The crux of those blogposts is that
1: Obvious that everyone are learning programming online, as books cater to the learning only to some extent.
2: Writing programming/technical books is not a lucarative career and ROI is very low.
3: Writing a programming book and the process of editing is very painful.
4: Organically books are not evolving in this industry.

I have few questions to everyone

1. With the costs of training shooting up heavily, if not books, where do you get good expertise on these advanced technologies and programming? Where does books fit in your learning path?
