All that the author said about fracking and oil prices seems reasonable but he missed a crucial point: Saudi has an extremely low debt to GDP ratio. Their foreign reserves are huge. How can such a country go bankrupt in such a short period of time? Their budget is in deficit mainly because it is one of the world's most generous welfare states (unemployment benefits, free health care, 0% income tax etc.) Rather than bankruptcy, I fear instability/rebellion once the government starts cutting back on welfare and is forced to take some unpopular measures such as imposing taxes. Democratic countries like India are far better equipped to face downturns because the people express their anger by voting out the incumbent government and then the anger cools down at least until they start building anger on the next incumbent. Saudi lanti monarchies, China lanti single party governments unnappudu they're in a constant threat of rebellion. That's why they try to censor media and curb freedom of expression by jailing people. “The problem for the Saudis is that US shale frackers are not high-cost. They are mostly mid-cost, and as I reported from the CERAWeek energy forum in Houston, experts at IHS think shale companies may be able to shave those costs by 45pc this year – and not only by switching tactically to high-yielding wells. Advanced pad drilling techniques allow frackers to launch five or ten wells in different directions from the same site. Smart drill-bits with computer chips can seek out cracks in the rock.
