"My son is thinking about quitting the NIT Andhra Pradesh in such an uncertain environment," said Rajiva Kumar Mehrotra, a local resident whose son Rishabh Mehrotra was allocated seat in NIT Andhra Pradesh by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSSA). Following the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for IITs and NITs, the allocation of seats was done by JoSSA. Mehrotra also wrote to the authorities and the Prime Minister to convey his concern. "The NIT Andhra Pradesh has been brought on paper only with no physical existence. No building, no teaching and non-teaching staff, no lab or any required infrastructure. It is also clear from its own website and other notifications," he said adding that the institute has advertised for ad-hoc appointments of faculties and officers, which shows the ill policy of the management. Mehrotra's concern is seemingly valid, as the institute's notification suggests that due to constraints 'beyond the control' of the mentoring institute (NIT Warangal), class work of NIT Andhra Pradesh cannot commence on the scheduled date July 28. Class work is likely to start by last week of September or first week of October. The exact date of commencement of class work, availability of hostel accommodation will be announced later. "This notification further increased our worry about the academic future of my son," said Mehrotra. However, the authorities of the institute said that efforts are being made to begin the classes at the earliest. "Seeing the concerns of the students and parents we are trying to begin the class in the third week of September," the resident coordinator NIT Andhra Pradesh Dr T Ramesh told TOI over phone on Thursday. When asked about the delay in semester, he said, "It is not a big issue, we will compensate it." Established in 2015-16, NIT Andhra Pradesh is the 31st institution among the chain of NITs started by the Government of India. Its website says that faculty for the new institute will be taken initially under ad-hoc basis. Some senior faculty members superannuated from IITs and NITs also will be taken.
