Hyderabad: Chain snatching incidents are on the rise in the city according to statistics available with the Crime Records Bureau (CRB). According to the CRB, a total of 647 chain-snatching cases were recorded in 2014 while 465 cases were filed till July this year. While government is making tall claims of sanctioning Rs 44.58 crores for establishment of city-wide CCTV surveillance system covering Hyderabad and Cyberabad Police Commissionerates, repeated incidents occur under the very nose of the police. Forget the public places, even some police stations do not have CCTV cameras outside the building to curb or record crime incidents. âConstruction work is going on at the police station, so the CCTVs are not functioning,â a senior police official of Kachiguda division said when asked about whether any CCTV footage was available on the July 17 incident of chain snatching. In the notorious incident, P Sumitra, a 40-year-old woman from Barkatpura succumbed to her injuries after she was pulled down from a moving bike by a chain snatcher. âWe are detaining repeat offenders under Preventive Detention (PD) Act and taking chain snatching cases very seriously,â Additional CP (Crimes &SIT) Swathi Lakra said.
