Yes that is true,also mentioned in below post. Mulayam initially proposed kalam's name and all national news papers mentioned this. But why CBN gave false statement regarding this in our local news papers ?

The veteran scientist, sources said, had endeared himself to the SP chief as scientific advisor to the Union defence minister. Ahead of the presidential polls in 2002, though, the BJP considered it a politically astute move to appoint a Muslim president. Sources said then-prime minister AB Vajpayee conferred with senior BJP leader LK Advani and was keen to propose Kalam's name as president. Since the BJP did not have the numbers to back Kalam's candidature, Mulayam's help was enlisted. The SP chief, who had already worked with Kalam, and saw the political benefits of such an appointment back home in Uttar Pradesh, then trumped the BJP and proposed Kalam's name himself. With the BJP and most other political parties backing Kalam's candidature, the former DRDO chief went on to register a thumping victory over INA hero Lakshmi Sehgal, the Left Front's choice, in the presidential elections. In fact, Mulayam proposed Kalam's candidature for a second time also, in 2012, along with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. The contest, if it had happened, would have pit Kalam against Pranab Mukherjee. While Banerjee dug in her heels and stuck with her choice of Kalam, Mulayam Singh Yadav later withdrew his support to the missile man after discussions with the Congress. |
