For the BJP-led NDA, it was a good opportunity to placate its disgruntled ally, sulking over the BJP's refusal to concede his demand to remove the discredited Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, from his post. So total was Mr Chandrababu Naidu's displeasure that he had spurned the Speaker's post, which should have gone to the Telugu Desam Party after the death of G. M. C. Balayogi in an air-crash. But after the NDA turned down his support to the Vice-President, Mr Krishna Kant, who was also acceptable to the Congress(I), and came out with the candidature of the Maharashtra Governor, Dr P. C. Alexander, who was unacceptable to the Congress(I) and the Left parties, the TDP supremo plumped for Dr Kalam. Though one would love to believe that Dr Kalam was selected for his scientific temper, his passion for making India self-sufficient in every aspect of life — from nuclear technology to food security — his gentle temperament and his people skills, the truth obviously lies elsewhere. At this point in time, it suits almost all political parties to support the candidature of Dr Kalam, one of the most non-controversial public figures ever. For Mr Chandrababu Naidu, the crucial election to the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly is on hand next year, and he hopes that, while going to vote, the Muslims will forget that he had supported a BJP-led NDA government in Delhi, and remember — and appreciate — that he was instrumental in sending Dr Kalam to Rashtrapati Bhavan. After all, had he not refused to endorse Dr Alexander's candidature, with certain support from Ms Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party and Ms Jayalalithaa's AIADMK, the NDA could have thrown the gauntlet at the Congress(I) and other Opposition parties, and would not have shied away from an election for the Presidential post. A jubilant Chandrababu Naidu recalled on Tuesday how there was no unanimity on the presidential candidate among the NDA constituents and its friends, including the TDP. "On June 8, when this was conveyed to me by the Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, I asked if there was a chance of a new candidate and then I suggested to him the name of Abdul Kalam, which came to me spontaneously". But for all the spontaneity that he claimed in suggesting Dr Kalam's name, what he said next during his chat with journalists certainly let the cat out of the bag. Urging the Opposition parties to play a constructive role in evolving a national consensus and looking beyond `routine politics", he added, significantly, that the choice of Dr Kalam as India's President would send "the right signal to the nation and international community at this hour of turmoil". He need not have said more. The "hour of turmoil" can be interpreted in more ways than one. The most obvious and significant event is the stand-off with Pakistan, an Islamic nation. Let us not forget that the war threats with Pakistan came close on the heels of the Gujarat pogrom. Forget Pakistani commentators, several political and analysts and commentators in the Indian media have openly said that India would not have taken the Kaluchak massacre so much more seriously than it did the terrorist attacks on the bastions of democracy — Parliament House and the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on December 13 and October 1, 2001 respectively — had it not been for the developments in Gujarat. With the twin attack from the Opposition parties and the relentless investigation by the media, both domestic and international, raising serious questions on the BJP-led government's ability to preserve the country's secular fabric and pluralist character, it was felt that war hysteria was intensified to divert attention from the Gujarat Government's alleged complicity with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal in the targeting of Muslims in the State following the Godhra carnage. As if on cue, the RSS spokesman has described Dr Kalam as "an ideal Bharatiya" And the VHP General Secretary, Mr Praveen Togadia, who is alleged to have played the lead role in fanning communal flames in Gujarat, bragged: "The choice of Mr Kalam shows that this government does not discriminate on communal lines if a person is a diehard nationalist." While Dr Kalam's friends and erstwhile colleagues at ISRO have welcomed his selection, a question that needs to be asked and answered is whether a scientist/technologist needs to be drawn into the rough and tumble of politics However much anybody might like to claim that the highest office in the land is above politics, one knows that, in reality, this is not so. Of course, Dr Kalam would be one of the few Presidents who will not take any political baggage to Rashtrapati Bhavan — Dr S. Radhakrishnan was another such president. But several occupants of Rashtrapati Bhavan have played politics. Those who know Dr Kalam or have worked with him are all praise for the simplicity, integrity, brilliance and vision of the man who has always wanted to see India self-reliant. Indigenisation has been the burden of his song during his various avatars in the DRDO, ISRO and, later, as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister. But perhaps the best and the most enduring quality of Dr Kalam is his ability to dream — dream about a strong, vibrant and self-reliant India, which can hold its own in the comity of nations. Spelling out this dream and how technology could help India realise it in the book India 2020, A Vision for the New Millennium written by him and Dr Y. S. Rajan, he says: "We believe that as a nation and as a people we need to shed our cynicism and initiate concrete action to realise the second vision for the nation. The first vision, seeded around 1857, was for India to become politically independent; the second one is to become a fully developed nation. Our successful action will lead to further action, bringing the vision much closer to reality.... "Somewhere down the line in our long history, we appear to have lost faith in ourselves. That mindset seems to persist. For a time, we shut our doors to other ideas and mainly fought among ourselves. Then came a period when we blindly adopted whatever was foreign. We seem to have a blind admiration for anything done outside our borders and very little belief in our own abilities. It is a sad state to be in, after fifty years of Independence. However, there are brighter spots, too." It is these brighter spots on which a billion plus Indians turn their gaze as we step back from the brink of a nuclear war with Pakistan. It is at times such as these that the contributions of scientists like Dr Kalam, who played such a crucial rule in the Pokhran blasts as well as in developing our missile technology, come under scrutiny. In this background it is comforting to note the "gentle" scientist's words that "missiles can also be used to drop flowers". | ||
