Narendra K Patni - the man who invented 'offshoring' decades before it became a global buzzword During his engineering and management education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1964 to 1969, Patni rubbed shoulders with the likes of Jay W Forrester, one of the legends of modern computing. Working with top consulting firms like Forrester Consulting and Arthur D Little gave him firsthand experience of consulting business which essentially involved outsourcing of work. The Marwari businessman in Patni sensed a great business opportunity in data conversion work, which he thought could be done back home in India where wages were low. That's how Patni invented a new way of doing business in September 1972 which would eventually be known as offshoring in America and outsourcing elsewhere. Patni also became a link in the chain of events which led to the birth of Infosys. The model invented by Patni, along with its improvised versions, has lived its full life in the past four decades and earned India a formidable place in global technology business. Finacle is one stand out product that Infosys built. I don't know the numbers but it should be the largest core banking solution that is deployed in India. And it has quite a bit of usage across other countries too. | ||

This blast, at the convocation of Indian Institute of Science's (IISc's) very first batch of undergraduates, came from the Indian information technology czar N R Narayana Murthy. The poser not only stumped the best of the scientific brains at IISc but also left them fumbling for a fitting reply. Murthy's salvo did not stop at that. The second blast: Is there one technology that has transformed the productivity of global corporations? And then the third: Is there one idea that has led to an earth-shaking invention to delight global citizens? Not a single hand went up in the auditorium to answer him. Murthy, in his address at Convocation-2015 of IISc here on Wednesday, re-ignited the debate on 'How have the Indian institutions including IISc and IITs contributed to bettering the lives of the people?' Pointing to researches in the Western universities that gave the world the car, the electric bulb, the radio, antibiotics, the television, the computer, the internet, Wi-Fi, lasers, robots, which have improved productivity and health, Murthy said, "The reality is that there is no such contribution from India in the last 60 years! The only two ideas (from India) that have transformed the productivity of global corporations are the global delivery model and the 24-hour workday which came from a company called Infosys (the company that he co-founded)." Highlighting problems like illiteracy, poor public health, pollution of water sources and increasing vehicular emissions, he said, "This country has no shortage of problems to be solved urgently....The country's best hope are the youngsters. There is no difference in intellect, enthusiasm, energy and confidence between the young students in the Western universities and in the IISc. But there has been no impactful work in terms of accomplished research here. There is not much that they accomplish when they go into the real world here in India. This is an issue that academicians, politicians, bureaucrats and corporate leaders must debate deeply." He underlined the need for recreating the magic of the 1960s in India when the country witnessed the green revolution, the white revolution, and made advances in atomic energy and the space programmes. In an effort to show the way forward, Murthy said: "We have to become more open-minded in welcoming foreign intellectuals and students. We have to create opportunities for our students and faculty to spend time in well-known universities abroad. There must be free flow of ideas between our intellectuals and foreign scholars. The younger faculty must have full freedom to pursue their line of research without any hindrance." Murthy appealed to the students to develop an independent, inquisitive and problem-solving mind-set. Stating that youngsters in India tend to forget even basics of any subject once the examinations are over, Murthy told the students: "Focus on learning concepts. You should apply them as often as you can, update them with contemporary advances and use them in your work to understand new ideas and solve new problems." NRN takes the baton from Prof CNR? This is one of the most striking of ironies. NR Narayana Murthy, the frontrunner in a field considered by Bharat Ratna Professor CNR Rao as a "distraction to scientific research", exhorted the youth to develop scientific temper and attitude to foster innovation and inventions here in India. Prof Rao is known for his bitter criticism of the manner in which the lucre of information technology has swept the youth away from basic sciences. The octogenarian Nat-ional Research Professor and Linus Pauling Research Professor, Prof Rao, however would have been proud to hear the Infosys co-founder almost mirroring his thoughts. But the world renowned scientist — who also spearheads the Indian nanotechnology revolution from his Bengaluru-centred Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Rese-arch (JNCASR) — would most likely ask: "But just how would that happen if basic sciences lack the youth who are taken away by the IT sector?"
