Neuromorphic engineering probably??

The whole thought process of human on a circuit which we r already seeing in the cars etc.

I think its a long way to go to completely evolve and to see the uses in day to day life but that would probably be the next big computing thing...

machine learning is immediate next big thing.... machines learn from repeated patterns and they will do things for you...

example: google car. and self-driving cars... a refrigrator that knows what food you are running low and order that on amazon directly (echo+refrigrator)...

drones are already here for defense.. we will have them for civil apps...

"The 21st century will be the Indian century and will have technology at its heart," said Virginia Rometty, chief executive of International Business Machines Corp, adding that her company can play a huge role in improving and assisting the growth of India as a digital economy.

Addressing an industry event -THINK Forum -at a hotel in Gurgaon on Tuesday, Rometty spoke about the opportunity for IBM in the use of new disruptive technologies such as big data, analytics and cloud in the Indian government's financial inclusion programme, the over 3,000 startups and Digital India. Rometty is in India on a two-day visit, and is expected to meet the top leadership of the country on Wednesday.

Talking about the next wave of technology, Rometty spoke about cognitive technology and how IBM's supercomputer Watson had scaled up in the last 18 months since it was launched as a commercial business."It looks at information and it learns, it works in natural languages, and it deals in the grey area... (Today) about 5,000 companies, tens of thousands of developers and now 100 of the best universities in the world are teaching kids (using Watson)," she said. Watson uses cognitive technology, has the ability to store information and learn from its mistakes, much the same way as humans do. It shot to fame in 2011 when it beat top contestants on the American game show "Jeopardy", which involves contestants framing the question for a general knowledge clue provided in answer form. Available as a cloud service, Watson began "learning" in English as a language, and has expanded to Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese.

In India, Rometty said shopping, healthcare, travel and education were areas where Watson could be deployed successfully.

Rometty was joined by Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti AirtelBSE 0.21 %, one of IBM's biggest customers, who spoke about the ways IBM had helped India's largest telecom operator scale to almost 300 million subscribers in a little over a decade.

"Networks have evolved... Earlier we manufactured voice and SMS, and that is what the customer consumed. Today customers are consuming something we have no control over. It's the world of apps. In some sense, most of them bypass us.We have to ensure that they seamlessly play out," said Mittal.

He also spoke about the growth opportunities for telecom operators in the new government's Digital India and Financial Inclusion programmes. Talking about the explosive growth of data traffic in India, Mittal said he expects data usage on the Airtel network to reach 1 gigabyte per customer per month from the existing 600-700 megabytes, in a few months.
