This was, however, a departure from the earlier decided schedule by which Naidu was to formally inaugurate the 12-day holy event at Pushkara Ghat and then move on to the VIP Saraswati Ghat. But after formally launching the Pushkarams, Naidu decided to stay on at Pushkara Ghat, which was meant for the devotees. This delayed the opening up of the ghat for the general public, over a lakh of whom had already converged at the gates (some from 3 am) and were impatiently waiting to get inside. The opening of the gates got delayed even more as the security personnel had to ensure the smooth departure of the chief minister and his entourage of ministers from the ghat -- which finally happened at around 7.45 am.
