For in India, Bhakti or what may be called the path of devotion or hero-worship, plays a part in its politics unequalled in magnitude by the part it plays in the politics of any other country in the world. Bhakti in religion may be a road to the salvation of the soul. But in politics, Bhakti or hero-worship is a sure road to degradation and to eventual dictatorship.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently blew off a whole afternoon of meetings in New York to go and see the Statue of Liberty with his family. As an exasperated organiser said, They dont understand you cant do that after appointments are made. Not for sightseeing.

Fadnavis should resign, if this is true. How can anyone cancel appointments and go for city tours? Such a shame.

To be sure, wooing NRIs is not a purely BJP phenomenon although Modi may have converted it into an art form. Ministers have been coming to attend ethnic gatherings for over two decades at taxpayers’ expense while doing a little “official” business on the side.
They demand to meet a couple of US officials at short notice — sometimes on a weekend — to make the trip seem kosher but when the meetings are arranged, they often show up illprepared. Or don’t engage with their interlocutor.
