Whats it all about:

The Prodigal son returning to reclaim the legacy of his illustrious father.

Plot:

RM wasnt kidding here....Plot is straight out of a Chandamama/Amar Chitra Katha book....Sivudu is brought by Tribals after finding him as a baby. He eventually goes out of his comfort zone to face his destiny as the true successor of a mighty empire.

Whats Good:

A lot of things. To start with, the very visualisation of Rajamouli. Every frame oozes with grandness and scale never before seen on Indian screens. And some of them are stunning & literally world class. Most of the 1st half is set almost in a fairy tale world and even reminds us of Chiru-Sri scenes in JVAS. The attention to detail is fantastic. Even the very simple scenes are shot with great style. Rajamouli is a bloody wizard. Trust me. And if you thought spending money alone shall get us grandness, we could never be more wrong. It requires class.

The Fight Choreography is simply the best on the Indian Screen to date....be it the War sequences, Weapons used and the way they were used....And I think it's the first time again on Indian screen that our typical Indian War strategies are so brilliantly explained and executed. Every actor who wielded a weapon was brilliantly trained and were awesome.

The BGM is really good...Most of the songs are blended beautifully into the story except for a couple of them.

I thought the chemistry between Prabhas & Tamannah was crackling and their track was shot very aesthetically.

Emotions run pretty high in the movie and as with SSR's trademark, there are quite a few goosebump moments.

Actors:

Ramyakrishna simply stands out. It was like a cakewalk for her and even then she is like much farther than the rest. Her characterisation was great too.
Satyaraj got a great role and the guy looks in great shape for his age. Absolutely convincing.

Prabhas had to be the only hero in TFI who cud have carried off this look even with so few dialogues. He looks the part of a macho Crown Prince so effortlessly that its not even a joke. Women folk are guaranteed to go weak in their knees. In this part though, there was not enough scope to show his emotional turmoil.

Rana is a worthy antagonist to Prabhas. Physique wise, he even dominates and towers above Prabhas(Who wud hav thought it to be possible?). There are pretty strong elevation scenes to show his physical prowess which almost border on superhuman.

Anushka & Tamannah - Both do justice to their screen times. Tam is de-glamourised initially which was a surprise.

The Not So Good:

There are a few.

The Biggest issue with the movie is breaking it up into 2 parts. While it gave ample scope to tell the back story well and establish the characters, you cant help but feel that a lot of typical SSR high emotional/goosebump shots were missed in the 1st part, as the main conflict point in the story hasnt arrived yet. Hereby, some of the build-up scenes do not probably get the same elevation as in previous SSR movies. But otherwise they are good normally except by SSR's high emotional benchmarks.

Screenplay cud hav been a lil better.

While Rana was imposing physically, I thought it was an opportunity missed to show him even more menacing characterization wise. This again might only come up in 2nd part. Same with Kalakeya Main Villian...a little vicious backstory on him wud hav helped more.

Dialogue delivery of Prabhas cud hav been a lil better.

Overall Analysis:

First things first....The good things in the movie are so good and grand that they literally dwarf the little flaws. This is an unparalleled achievement by our very own Rajamouli and we can proudly chest thump that NO DIRECTOR in India has visualised, attempted & executed something on such a magnificent scale.

That War scene alone deserves to have a separate documentary. Absolutely world class.

When we have movies of this kind, it shall be undeserving to even nit-pick on it. Story is the simplest of plots but executed like a fairy tale. All the money spent is evident in every shot. It is a beautiful mystical world created by the team which still feels Indian and real.

Breaking the movie into 2 parts is new to us and hence it shall have its share of good and bad. But going by what they've done with the 1st part, I can't wait to see the conclusion, which I am sure shud be even better content wise.

I think it doesnt matter whose fans we are, its movies like these which break stereotypes and make us root for everyone in it. It's a fantastic achievement by the team and hatsoff to Rajamouli, who probably deserves a separate thread by us.

Overall Rating - 4 Stars of 5.

Bottomline - Just rush to the biggest screen with the best sound system and revel in the experience instead of being a critic. These kind of movies dont come often.
