each year is perceived in terms of chunks at a higher, grander, larger level than any year preceding it, and therefore each passing year contains fewer top-level chunks than any year preceding it, and so, psychologically, each year seems sparser than any of its predecessors. One might, somewhat facetiously, symbolize the ever-rapider passage of time by citing the famous harmonic series:

1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + 1/6 + 1/7 + 1/8 +...

by which I mean to suggest that one’s nth year feels subjectively n times as short as one’s first year, or n/5 times as short as one’s fifth year, and so on. Thus when one is an adult, the years seem to go by about at roughly a constant rate, because — for instance — (1/35)/(1/36) is very nearly 1. Nonetheless, according to this theory, year 70 would still shoot by twice as fast as year 35 did, and seven times as fast as year 10 did.

But the exact numerical values shown above are not what matter; I just put them in for entertainment value. The more central and more serious idea is simply that relentless mental chunking makes life seem to pass ever faster as one ages, and there is nothing one can do about it....

Time is slow in the Present, no matter what keeps us occupied.
Pichha busy work-day lo koodaa chaalaa late gaa EOD ayyiddi. ippudu inkaa lunch-time avvaledu naaku.
Time is always fast in the Past, specially when you particularly realize.
Pichha busy work-week from Monday to Friday.. everyday feels slow.. but come Friday, you'd feel time has passed very fast.
It is just relative nature of the continuum.

Even as a kid, I felt no different. Present is always slow, remembering past always makes us feel Time has gone by like a breeze.

I told you to let it go!!"

My theory -

Memories are mainly connected with people than events as such. Like India's 1983 world cup win was the day Kapil Dev lifted the cup on the balcony of Lords. Your first bicycle ride alone was the day, your dad/elder brother left you on the dusty road to keep going forward. Your first movie was the day you were fascinated seeing a motion picture on screen with your family/friends .. Your best friend at college could be the guy who gave to little legspace to board a crowded running bus/train or could have been the guy who shared his samosa with you in the canteen while talking about the pretty girl in pink.

Bottom line is, memories are just people. In your young age, the "n" number of people you are associated with is few, so fewer memories but stronger memories (emotionally). Once you are grow older, you have "nnn" number of people associated in life, your family, your school friends, your neighborhood friends, friends @ college, work, random dbers :D, your wife side (her mom's family and her dad's family etc), your dad's friends and their kids .. so basically, there are "nnn^n" memories .. but are not such strong memories as your childhood. Hence, your stronger memories, emotionally, remain with you more than your recent weak impressions on mind (memories).

Mental...here is my theory..our brain files away those events that are on either ends of the emotional spectrum as memories..those events that have an impact on the limbic system...out of this repository of memories, people generally tend to fondly and repeatedly recall positive memories more than any other memories (negative or filler events)..for example, you would've had a miserable break up with your college sweetheart but when you think about her now, you are more likely to recall pleasant memories...a mother would've had a painful, near fatal delivery - but she is most certainly going to remember the euphoric feeling of seeing her child for the first time more than anything else..

So obviously positive memories are reinforced (by virtue of repeated reminiscing) and would have established neural pathways - therefore those would be your most readily accessible memories ....strong negative events could come a close second to these positive memories...everything else (filler events or navigational events) falls by the wayside and is forgotten..

Now, when we sit back and ask ourselves "what are my most pleasant or positive memories", it is no surprise that the brain takes us to the most recalled, most established neural pathways - these may be childhood memories for some people, or these could be a sequence of most positive memories from all times for some people...

That's the easy part as to why we remember what we remember..

Now let me think aloud about the difficult question, why aren't we making memories as often as we'd like to make? To answer this question, we should ask ourselves "are we leading a good life?" The conscious answer to this question, for most of us, would be a resounding yes...we are leading very comfortable lives, living in a relatively peaceful slice of history and have all conscious reasons that would lead us to say "yes, we are leading a good life and we should be thankful for what we have"...

So why do we feel like time is flying and that we don't have enough time to think about good stuff? I see the following reasons:

1. Today, we are busier than we've ever been..our responsibilities and obligations have only increased..
2. To keep up with our responsibilities and our own ambitions and internal conflicts (like the one we are discussing now), we bury ourselves in more activities
3. The amount of information we deal with is incredible and our brains have probably not evolved to deal with so much information in so little time..our work emails, the meetings, the unanswered text msgs and emails, our incomplete thoughts, our books, facebook/linkedin messages and articles, business emails/investment related dealings, chores of family life, all the pending household items and the guilt we carry around for not getting around to important things etc etc..the list is endless
4. We aren't taking the time to think about stuff, we are definitely not spending enough time reflecting on our lives or over the recent events or weekends

Sooooo. It is not surprising that many people find refugee in the "good old times"...when time was definitely more accessible..when swathi books, cricket matches, one step catch matches with paper balls kept us genuinely entertained

May be we do remember our current days as good old days 20 years down the lane..may be we are just doing fine..

kiki, when I am telling a boring story to my kids, I feel like I have been telling the story for an hour..even though its only few minutes. today I narrated a story which was about 30-minutes but it felt like 3 or 4 minutes. after the story, when I checked the clock I was surprised that it was that long.

again, the circumstances (boring story vs fun story) were different with which I perceived the time differently.

kiki, time will never be slow or fast. only how we perceive it changes. let us say, even at this stage you want to receive your dearest ones at the airport (coming from other country or other place), time will never the same way it moved few days back or day before. it will be like the slowest hour/day.

age does not matter how you perceive the time. circumstances will influence how we see it. with the 5-day work culture, we are eagerly waiting for EOD-Friday and finishing Sat/Sun so again waiting for the weekend. so it appears that time is flying. but let us say you dont have a job and u dont need a job, then every single day will be like a week or month or year.

again, it is not the age, it is the circumstances that we live change how we see it.

Rocketk2:

As kids we live in the moment. the time is completely cherished.

this is called beginners mindset - as i said - as kids we keep learning and exploring most of the time and hence are focused on things we are doing(enjoying). Even if you are the age of 30 and just started learning driving, the focus you have while learning the skill consumes your mind entirely. Once you get comfortable with the skill your focus is not at the same levels - our mind wanders.

its great to stay in the moment - but as we grow older it becomes increasingly difficult is what i have observed. It gets tiresome to stay focused as we get older, implying we expend significant amounts of energy in such act.

Possibly meditation is an answer to this, to train ourselves to be able to focus without expending too much energy.

I believe the same thing happens with movie watching.

As an adult, I always seem to anticipate what is happening next. I walk into a movie theater and within 5 mins am thinking about what after movie :-) I guess this is creating the illusion of time moving faster.

One more bandwidth waste thread...

Another week, Another Month, Another year has passed... time flies so quickly these days - quite a recurring thought that keeps popping in my head every so often . When I try to recollect how time passed by, I seem to be able to recollect my childhood days much better than what I did couple of months back!

It seems to me that my child hood years were slow, eventful and one with lots of memories and stories - as I grow older time seems to move fast, things seems to have collapsed in to smaller frames of time and generally busier. Although, my busiest and probably stressful days of life were the two years before I appeared for EAMCET examinations i seem to feel that those two years lasted for a longer time.

I realized that its not just me who feels this way. Over the long weekend spent sometime with old buddies up in the mountains on a camping trail, they all expressed the same feeling when this topic came up.

I did some reading on this - and it appears that no one is sure as to why this happens. Some psychologists have put up some theories - it seems it could be a combination of these and may be more

1) Memorable Events - Young ones have more memories as they keep learning new things at a much more frequent interval than their counterparts.

2) the amount of time passed relative to age - for a 20 year old, last two years is 10% of their life, while last two years for a 40 year old is 5% of their life and in turn experience

3) biological clock slowing down with age

4) Anticipation of critical events - when younger we tend to wait eagerly for certain events to happen, which makes it like things move slower . like the "Are we there yet?" moments while traveling to your favorite vacation spot

some psychologists think that the stress of handling too many things at a time can cause it, but i feel that should work against the experience of speeding up time.

Either way - growing old anedhi mathram ardham ayyindhi :D
