Some cases its done purely to save time, but in some cases, they dont do it as they are afraid if they dont invoke navagrahas properly, then it will cause negative effects. So they get this only priests come.
We invoke them to take care of our house when satyanarayana pooja is performed on new house, So when they are already taking care ane feeling untundi kadaa andukani alaaga janalu feel ayyi skip chestaru until new occasion comes when their requirement is there, when doing on their own. Vallantata vallu chesevallu 3-4 hours cheyyaru, they try to windup in 1-2 hrs so they customize the process. satyanaranayana swamy pooja lo navagraha pooja is mandatory for few occasions like grihapravesam, after marriage. Thats why priests will never skip for these occasions. There is a very specific reason for that. Navagraha will become athithi devatas along with Narayana swamy, when we invoke them properly, the house is taken care of these navagrahas. Samething with after marriage when newly wed couple enter their house and do satyanarayana pooja, they will be helped by not only these devatas but also lakshmi who will give many beneficial things. I think you should NOT skip navagraha pooja. before the avahana of main deity we always must pray their upa devatalu (vaishnavites will do hayagreeva pooja) and nava grahalu are the grahalu who will decide our fate in general day to day. Intlo manam own gaa satyanarayana swamy pooja cheskunte without priest, we have the liberty to skip, but priests will never do that. The same Shiridi priest is coming to detroit and performing Satyanarayana vratam not Sai satyavratam.. In sai satya vratam you are mostly right, they do the same overall process, without navagraha pooja, means starting with ganesh pooja, then sai ashtottara pooja and read 5 stories.
