TRS supremo and Telangana Chief Minister KCR is under intense fire from the state's Congress and TDP leaders for skipping the 94th birth anniversary celebrations of the late Indian Prime Minister and world renowned economist, PV Narasimha Rao. PV was offered rich tributes at the PV Ghat on the Necklace Road. Condemning KCR's absence from paying homage to PV, the Telangana Congress Chief Utham Kumar Reddy said that KCR has no respect towards the legendary politician from the Telangana soil. The PV's birth anniversary celebrations also witnessed the coming together of the Telangana and AP Congress leaders after a long time. Speaking on the occasion, the Congress leaders said that even the state's BJP leaders showed no respect towards PV but they're always busy promoting their leaders like Vallabh Bhai Patel and even vouch for Gandhi's killer Godse. What's the best thing to ever come out of Andhra Pradesh? A certain Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, aka P.V.Narasimha Rao, also known as PVNR. If today we can aspire to better paying jobs or dream of having our own startup in India, the credit goes to the man in the picture above. Manmohan Singh, would have been just another file pushing, nameless babu, it was P.V.Narasimha Rao, who bought him into the limelight, making him the Finance Minister, and then presenting the budget that broke the shackles. He bought in terms like "Liberalization, Globalization" into the Indian political and economic discourses, liberated a whole lot of industries from the Licence-Permit raj, and in a way unleashed the inherent entreprenuerial spirit. Some of his major achievements included. Abolishing the Controller of Capital Issues in 1992, that decided the prices and number of share units a firm could issue. The SEBI Act of 1992, which gave SEBI the legal authority to regulate the security market. Opening India's equity markets to FII's. Encouraging FDI by increasing maximum limit on foreign share capital to 51%. Streamlining the procedures for FDI approval in about 35 industries. When he took over as PM in 1991, FDI was just around 132 million USD, by the time he stepped down from office in 1996, it grew to 5.3 billion USD. While his economic reforms are well known, he took bold initiatives on the foreign policy front too. Normalizing relations with Israel which he started in 1992, also more active engagement with the West, in a post Cold War era. He also cultivated a strong relationship with Iran, while proactively adopting a Look East policy, a closer relation with ASEAN. His engagement with China and Iran, ensured Pakistan's attempts to have a resolution passed on Kashmir at UNHRC, came a cropper. In fact sending A.B.Vajpayee and Salman Khurshid to counter the Pakistan resolution on human rights in Kashmir was a master stroke. The numerous scandals that broke out in his regime, the Babri Masjid demolition, were however a big negative mark on his reign. A post graduate in law, he was fluent in Urdu,Oriya,Marathi, Bengali,Gujarati,Tamil, apart from Telugu of course, and he could also speak in English,French,Arabic,Spanish, Greek, German, whew. When P.V.Narasimha Rao took over as PM, in 1991, India was in the worst possible crisis, Mandal, Mandir-Masjid agitations had polarized the society, India's trusted friend USSR was grappling with it's own existence , the economy was precarious, with India having to mortgage it's gold, its former PM, Rajiv Gandhi had been assasinated in the worst possible manner. And on top of it, secessionist movements in Punjab, Kashmir raged, while LTTE went on a rampage down South. When PV stepped down in 1996, the secessionist movement in Punjab was crushed ruthlessly, while LTTE was stamped out in Tamil Nadu, Kashmir still continued to be a hot spot though.
