HYDERABAD: The Revanth Reddy incident has delivered a mortal blow to the TDP not only in Telangana, but in Andhra Pradesh as well. Party leaders from AP conceded that the cash-for-vote scam has demolished the image of Chandrababu Naidu as a clean administrator. "It is by projecting such an image that Naidu had successfully taken on the YSR Congress by describing its president Jaganmohan Reddy as someone steeped in corruption. After this incident, it will be the turn of the YSR Congress to call us corrupt leaders," lamented a senior TDP leader. And true to the prediction, the YSR Congress lost no opportunity in assailing Naidu and the TDP on Monday. YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu lambasted Naidu for "looting Andhra Pradesh and using that money in Telangana". The Congress too was not far behind, with its leader Devineni Nehru demanding an investigation into Naidu's 'involvement' in the scam. "The deal would not have been possible without the involvement of Naidu. Therefore, he too should be booked," Nehru said. In fact, according to sources in the TRS government, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao through the ACB wants to fix Naidu, his son Lokesh and a minister in the AP cabinet by linking them to the Rs 50 lakh cash that was seized in the cash-for-vote scam. AP TDP leaders are, meanwhile, worried over the opposition parties projecting Naidu not only as corrupt but also as someone who is focusing more on the development of Telangana rather than AP. "In the recent Mahanadu, the AP CM stressed on the development of Telangana and did not speak much about the residual state. This can give the YSR Congress the leverage to portray Naidu as hung up on Hyderabad and Telangana," said a TDP leader. Meanwhile, TDP leaders admitted that prospects of the party's revival in Telangana are now almost zilch. The high amount of Rs 5 crore being offered for a single vote will also become the centre of national debate. Insiders say this is the biggest crisis for Naidu after he took over the party in 1994. "Naidu has weathered various corruption charges during his first tenure, but they could not be proved in a court of law. But the Revanth Reddy case has left us defenceless. In fact, to show that he is not corrupt, Naidu made the declaration of his assets and that of his family an annual affair. Now, in one stroke, he has lost the moral upper hand that he has been enjoying with regard to Jagan," said a TDP leader. Not surprisingly not only the party, but even Naidu has gone silent after 'Operation Revanth' that exposed the vulnerability of the party. For now the message delivered to Naidu is: Clear out from Telangana, and fast. It is in the midst of this stunning blow that the AP government and the TDP rank and file would have to conduct the various events they had planned in connection with the state formation day and one year of the TDP regime. | ||
