HYDERABAD: The Telangana government on Saturday asked Hitachi to explore the possibility of working with the state to introduce a smart card system in Telangana. Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who met a delegation from Hitachi Solutions, said that the company can begin with a focus on Hyderabad and then expand the smart card service to other big towns such as Warangal, Khammam and Karimnagar.

The smart card system would replace multiple cards with a single card that can function as a debit card, identity proof, pre-paid transportation ticket card and as access control to work places.

The chief minister's offer came during his discussions with Ananthanarayanan, CEO & managing director, Hitachi Solutions India, Mike Gillis, president and global chief operating officer, Hitachi Solutions America and Gary Peterson, executive vice-president Hitachi, among others.

Hitachi India CEO told the chief minister that their company already has a presence in Hyderabad and would begin its second operations unit this August. The company, Ananthanarayanan said, was willing to partner with the state government in areas of smart city solutions, healthcare and education.

The chief minister also suggested that Hitachi should explore setting up a heavy machinery manufacturing unit in the Telangana. He said the state was set to introduce and implement a new industrial policy soon that will make it easy to set up industries in the state, according to a press release from the chief minister's office.

Earlier, the company representatives met industries minister Jupally Krishna Rao and said they would prepare a blueprint of their plans for partnering with the Telangana government and submit it shortly.
