YSR, known for his courage, single- mindedness and loyalty, also had great respect for his elders, especially his teachers. The fact that he had set up a school in memory of his teacher Venkatappa, whom he had loved and respected greatly, stands testimony to that fact. The school is not like any other school in the country. Here the students from poor and downtrodden families get corporate education free of cost as YSR believed that education was an undeniable right of every child who is the future of the country. The man, who stressed the need for English-medium education and introduced `Success� schools, launched the programme at his home town, Pulivendula. During one of his visits to the Pulivendula constituency, he expressed a desire to set up a school in memory of his teacher Venkatappa who had taught him the value of education. He said that it would be his Guru Dakshina to his teacher. His son and Kadapa MP Jaganmohan Reddy took upon himself the task of translating his father�s idea into reality with the help of YSR Foundation set up by him. The school, Venkatappa Memorial English Medium School, was built on a 15-acre site at Bhakapuram in Pulivendula town and began functioning from the academic year 2007- 08. At a cost of Rs 5 crore, state-ofthe- art infrastructure was provided. It has 46 classrooms, a library, a science lab, an activity room, a reading hall, an audio visual room, and a storeroom. As many as 44 teachers and 31 non-teaching staffers work tirelessly to make it a niche school in the area. It has two buses to ferry students to and fro. Computer education is also offered at the school. The YSR Foundation bears all the fess _ tuition fee, examination fee, uniform, books, etc _ on behalf of the students. Children from families having white ration cards from the local area are eligible for admission. Today, as many as 870 students are studying there at the school which achieved 100 percent results in the SSC examination of 2008-09. Further, for the benefit of the students, a separate mineral water plant has been set up in the school and the students are also given special summer coaching in English. The school is personally monitored by its correspondent YS Bharathi, wife of Jagan.
