Okay, put some math around it. As he is doing it for free, essentially he is taking a risk on you. So give him equity equal to 2-3X of what he his opportunity cost is. So if he is working for 6 months, his ideal would be 40 K ideally. 2-3X of that would be 80-120 K. Now what value would an early stage company likes yours be, if say it is $1 Mn pre-money, then give him a 0.8-1.2% stake. Ideally the latter. If you need him on a continuing basis, then you need to treat him as a key resource and bump his equity to a 5-10% range. If you treat him a tech co-founder, bump it up to 15-20% | ||

Bhayya there are lot of startup experimentations in India and many of them are succeeding too. I will share my personal experience and you can set your expectations accordingly. I've a childhood buddy who has got very good contacts back in India... he is IIT and IIM alumni. After many many years during my India trip I accidentally met him and he told me about 2 projects that he is currently working on. His has experience in finance/banking sector and he is starting up a new venture (micro finance setup) along with his IIM classmates and few others whom he met during his career. I liked their idea they were pooling in about 1 Million dollars as initial capital (may not use all...). Their plan is to bring it up from scrath to a state where they are ready for take over. Their target for valuation at the time of sale or takeover is at least 10+ million and their target period is 5-6 years. I purely went by my gut feeling and the confidence I've on him and his experience. It took about more than year for him and his friends to pool in the required money to go on full throttle.. they made multiple US trips to gather money. Our wait time is at least 4-5 years and it's a gamble... hoping it will work out in our favor :-) Even if it doesn't work out I don't have any regrets as I know that I'm risking 100%. Bottom line is that you need to have patience and trust. In the end it may or may not work..... so I took a gamble and forgot about my investment for next 4-5 years.
