Of course both state and central govts are to blame. The main reason is high excise and sales tax - earlier when the price was 70, the govt. might have collected say 10 rupees as excise duty but when the price falls to 50, they increase the duties to collect the same 10. So though the price could fallen from 70-50, because of the additional duty% ages, the price declines only to 60 rather than 50. Excise and sales taxes are a huge revenue earner for the centre and states, they don't like to reduce the revenues from it. | ||

Partly the price increase is due to exchange rate as the rupee has fallen. But there is no parity - the prices have fallen by nearly 40-50%, while the prices have fallen by less than 10%..this is just being used an excuse to get the books of the oil marketing companies in shape... | ||

Before the elections last year, price was around Rs73-74,now it is around 67 in Delhi and with this increase, it might go upto 70. Despite a steep decline in international crude prices, the prices have not got down much. That is a bit surprising and reflects badly on the NDA. | ||
