Jan Dhan yojana is a financial inclusion activity and it is a great initiative. But the amount there is peanuts - piddly shiet, less than 0.5% of the bad loans in India.
All these loans pre-date him...but as long as crony capitalism continues these loans will continue. But unless you remove the moral hazard that govt. will continue to bail out banks and that MDs and Chairman's neck will be on the line, these will continue. | ||

Frankly the RBI governor can't do anything. The banks have to write a large part of it off and if they write it off, it will hurt their CAR etc and they have to raise further money to boost their capital base. And the govt. does not have money to infuse more capital into banks. And they can't raise money from the public as that will dilute equity below 51% and the unions will start crying. It is the govts. and banks job to bite the bullet. Can the interest rates be lower - yes. But will they improve the lending capacity of banks - No, because their main issue is weak balance sheets and NPAs and not higher interest rates. That is why even after the last round of interest rate cuts, the banks did not pass it on until recently when Rajan pulled them in public for not passing on then benefits to consumers. | ||
