Amazed to see an aircraft so huge and so close were equally thrilled to see superstar Chiranjeevi and Vijaishanti so close and so real. The actors played Good Samaritan by dragging the crowd away from the plane and helped the air hostess to distribute food. The villagers too were hospitable with food from their homes. The superstar and his troupe entertained the villagers who rejoiced the live show, and slowly the actor extracted his return by asking for a vehicle which arrived in the form of a tractor and trailer. He rode on the vehicle singing and dancing till he reached the main road almost two kilometers away. He was possessing the then super luxury item called 'cell phone' and ensured communication with his distributors at Tirupathi for help which arrived in the form of a van and he and his troupe jumped into it and vanished. People appreciated his presence of mind in the well planned move of keeping the crowd with him, timing his travel to the main road and the quick disappearance. How many of you are aware that megastar chiranjeevi had a narrow escape when a flight he was travelling in crashed near Tirupathi. Actor venkatesh, actress vijayashanthi and chiranjeevi's father-in-law an actor himself Allu Ramalingiah were also travelling with him. This happened on Nov 15, 1993. Hearing the news I decided to meet him in person along with my wife and daughter who was just around 3 years old. There was a huge crowd outside his T.Nagar bungalow and when we sent word that we were waiting outside, he immediately sent someone to take us inside. The moment he saw us, he started relating the incident on how the plane lost altitude after failing to land at Hyderabad and Capt Bhalla sensing that they were out of fuel as well as they may crash, made a landing in a soft ploughed field cushioning the crash. Luckily there were no casualties and major injuries. Chiranjeevi turned real life hero on the spot first shooting on his video cam the entire landing and when the emergency exits opened up, he and actor venkatesh started helping other passengers get of the damaged craft much to the chagrin of the air hostess who was urging them to evacuate. All ended well with all passengers and crew safely disembarking. He was so thankful to god and the prayers of his millions of fans and expressed happiness that we visited him...... A few days later his wife and he met Capt Bhalla at Chola Sheraton ( as it was called then) and prostrated themselves thanking him for saving his life. Such was the simplicity and down-to-earth behaviour of the mega star. Many times I have clicked his pictures and I was awestruck every time to see how he morphed into the character he was acting. A classic one was where he was acting as a common rowdy, a cop and a classical dance master. The first day I shot his pictures dressed to perfection and acting out a real rowdy character with the flamboyance. The next he was a strict police officer, as well as the romantic hero perfectly handsome and macho and dressed to kill. Within half an hour he came out dressed to the tee, clean shaven et all, chewing pan like a typical classical dance master, with pan stains slightly dribbling from the corner of his mouth. A versatile actor who really had a huge passion for his work and mimicked every bit of the character he was playing, Chiranjeevi is a delight to photograph anytime |
